Can we be rescued?
Although everything around us has become agile, changed and digitally transformed, the problems in the workplace have remained the same. Burnout, depression and negative stress are still on the rise.
In Japan, there is even a word for death by overwork: Karoshi. Can we be rescued? We are constantly evolving on a technical level and seemingly forget about the most essential thing: human beings.
Human or technology?
Is it all about sales, growth and returns? Or is the goal of making the time we work as exciting, creative and meaningful as possible? It is interesting that both can not be so separated from each other.
Because when people see a meaning in their work, they are more motivated and get involved much more. This, of course, clearly affects sales, growth and returns. So we continue as before. Maybe we'll add some cool and hip gadgets, but basically nothing will change. Why should it?
Life and work are inextricably linked
Often we blind in Company non-functioning management areas simply off. We continue to do as we once learned and calm our conscience with the fact that everyone is doing so.
But there are other approaches as well. More and more people worry about the future, about life and work. Both are inseparably linked. And in both areas, the digital world is changing a lot. To shape this change is in our hands.
Keep the people in focus
Mistakenly, many believe that simply "only" technology is changing through automation and digitization. That the main requirement is to deal with these permanent changes. But that's a fatal mistake.
The main requirement of today is not to master the rapidly changing technology. Not the technology, but the human being must be the focus. That may sound banal, but is a very demanding task. The danger is, after all, that after years of painstaking success, one "wakes up" and looks discontented at what has been achieved so far. Or worse in a burn-out ends.
Digitization brings transparency
There are two reasons why companies are increasingly concerned about (working) life. First, someone who loves or at least likes his work will do a much better job and do more. Second, the mood in this company is talking around.
In the past, one could miss out on the company about the company, the difficult situation, the customers or the lack of leadership skills of the bosses. Today, this "word of mouth" propaganda through rating portals in the network takes on a new dimension. Even a single very negative comment can cost valuable orders. Thanks to digitization, everything is extremely transparent. Sustainability, dealing with resources, employees and customers can no longer only be propagated, but must be practiced daily. Otherwise it will be revealed as a lie.
People need to realize the meaning
Whether we introduce process management, implement new project organization forms such as SCRUM or even just change the office space from single to open-plan offices - the affected people must recognize the purpose of the measures. If they do not know why they should change, the project is likely to hit the wall.
So it's about the human being. It's about understanding how we people tick, what we want and what's really important to us. And it's about changing patterns of thinking that have been with us for a lifetime. For that, we have to analyze and question why certain things are important to us today.
Call of duty
For the most part, we define ourselves and our self-esteem over our job. If we want to know who someone is, we usually first hear the job, the position, and maybe even the number of people you lead.
According to the Gallup study, 70 percent of people are not enthusiastic about their job and do "service by regulation" shows how much we really really worth. This raises the question: Why is "wasting" 5 / 7 of his life. Why should a person who is worth a lot himself do something eight hours a day, Monday through Friday, that does not really make him happy and makes him happy?
People want to experience meaning
How can people be motivated? The answer seems simple: By fulfilling the basic needs. Money is a factor - but by far not the most important thing.
People want to experience meaning in what they do every day. People want to be "useful" and appreciated. Digitization is further aggravating this circumstance. Where we used to work creatively and self-determined, algorithms and processes now take the lead.
Time to rethink
Let's change to agile people into a New Work - or better into a New Life, but please with sense! The time to rethink is already ripe.
But it's not enough to be as cool as Google and get a table tennis table or a slide into the company. We need profound behavioral changes, as we think about work, about people and ourselves. Then man can use every new technology in a meaningful way
