Career requirement flexibility
In order to gain a foothold in the working world and to climb the career ladder, people today need to be flexible as never - spatially, temporally and mentally. The generations, who are now in their 20ers and 30ers, have experienced unlimited freedom:
They have moved to Bavaria from studying in Bavaria or from Düsseldorf to Dresden, many of whom have first come to know the Erasmus semester in Europe. But the situation becomes more complicated if the career is to be reconciled with the love or even the family. How do German students keep their career?
Unicensus shows flexibility of students
Basically, the readiness for mobility is overwhelming, as a study by the Personaldienstleister univatively under 1.200 German students has found. For 89 percent, despite a fixed relationship, a change of residence is possible.
68 percent, however, make this a very attractive job. The city itself is less important: it plays an important role for just a good third.
Not without my love: long-distance relationship yes, internationally rather not
It is significantly more important to have the partner go to the new location and find a job there. More than half (53 percent) sees this as a necessary prerequisite for a career-related move. Distance also plays a role. A small majority of 53 percent would like to move away from the partner only so far that a weekend relationship is possible. 29 percent would like to see even more proximity and their partner also during the week. 14 percent, on the other hand, do not see a fixed relationship as an obstacle to full mobility: they would also move abroad if it is a career.
Career beginners know that the dream job is not waiting for them. Anyone who makes claims in relation to his / her workplace may have to accept only to find a place elsewhere. They are prepared to make compromises. Almost half of respondents (46 per cent) have already gained experience with remote connections and know that they can be managed as easily as ever before thanks to digital communication. Nevertheless, the overwhelming majority does not want to rely on Skype and Easyjet, but at least at the weekend together spend time.
Flexibility also for the partner's career
And what does it look like if the partner has to change work-related? The study draws a very similar picture: A majority of 53 percent would look for a job even in the new city. 39 percent would stay in their current place of residence and accept a long-distance relationship.
Only eight percent see neither relocation nor commuting as an option and would end the relationship. Overall, it shows that German young academics attach great importance to getting a career and relationship under one roof.
