Women and Career: What the ex-head of state advises

The Icelandic head of state Vigdis Finnbogadóttir was 1980 as the world's first woman democratically elected into office - and was a single mother. Creating freedom is also the secret of success of Fionnuala Meehan, Sales Director of Google Ireland. Every day after 8 hours at 16 or at the latest 17 o'clock closing time: The dinner with her husband and the three children are among their solid daily rituals. She rarely takes work home with her, at most she does phone calls from home. And she rarely sleeps less than seven hours a night. Her recipe: She set priorities and made that choice. "The colleagues accept that because I communicate it to them as clearly. Because only when I switch off, can I concentrate fully on my work in the office, "says Meehan.

Women friendly structures in Company create


The South Tyrolean entrepreneur Elisabeth Tocca relies in Bolzano has set up her own business in order to create exactly these freedom: For over 20 years, Bozenerin has worked for South Tyrolean companies such as Dr. Schär or Salewa in Marketing, she got off to do her own thing this year with her own company called CORA happywear, namely eco-fashion for kids. "If you give women freedom and flexibility, a lot can be done," says Tocca, who likes to use her own freedom to gather inspiration for the day before dawn on the mountain. She was encouraged by her husband, brother and friends. In general, their stable local network is very important to the founder: "My environment gives me the power and warmth to go back to work every day with energy," she says.

Concrete measures to promote women


This shows that companies can actually do something to support female employees. Studies make it clear that mixed teams are more motivated, more creative and perform better and have a better understanding, for example, of customer needs. Promoting women should therefore be a priority for many companies and, in many cases, appropriate action catalogs can be found.
