Job profile! Whale Watchers in New Brunswick, Canada: Flexibility as a Business Strategy

The tides in the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Canada, have the highest lift in the world and are unpredictable - much like the business strategy of David Welch: Fundy Tide Runners Company with which he offers whale watching for tourists. And the name is program!

david what

An adventurous business model?

Somehow I had imagined whale watching calm and contemplative, maybe even meditative in harmony with nature. But far from it: riding on a Zodiac dinghy in the fog with 12 knots across the water, chasing the next whale that pops up somewhere in the waters off St Andrews by-the-Sea to breathe is quite adventurous - and fits perfectly with Dave.

Because his business model is even the purest whale watching: “Mother nature is a capricious master. And she has a million tricks up her sleeve. You can only guess in theory what the whales will do next - you cannot be sure. "

The perfect setting for entrepreneurs

What he describes sounds like the perfect attitude towards life for an entrepreneur: Of course, you can acquire a lot of knowledge and work out all kinds of strategies. You can't really be sure what happens because the market is unpredictable. "

Dave therefore makes what is best as a whale watcher as well as entrepreneur: he reacts flexibly. For example, in which his Zociac snaps to a different location, when a whale is reported there over radio.

Flexibility as a competitive advantage

In this maneuverability, Dave sees his big advantage - in every respect: there are other providers for whale watching in St. Andrews - including catamarans and fishing boats. But Dave, he says, can react to the unforeseen things much faster with his Zodiac dinghy.

Also because he hardly has to pay for it: “For a catameran, for example, you need a crew, I can control the Zodiac by myself. So that doesn't cost me much! "He explains his businessConcept ABC School Joke Oud.

Foundation from the belly

Before Dave started his company in 1995, he had a good job with the government in the capital, Ottawa. But then he saw a whale watcher with a fast and agile Zodiac inflatable boat in British Columbia in the west of Canada and thought spontaneously: "Thats me - I want that too!"

Dave admits that the idea has mainly inspired the boat. In just a few hours, he had decided, out of his guts, to throw up his job in Ottawa. Five days later he quit. Without business plan and double floor.

No Risk, no Fun!

The company's location was also quickly found: St Andrews by the Sea was the birthplace of Dave's father, so many contacts were available. Since then, Dave has been doing what he enjoys: he heats with a zodiac over the water. And quite successful: he has won several prizes so far.

To give up the safe job at a government agency in order to do something as adventurous as whale watching with a fragile motorized rubber dinghy: unthinkable for many Germans. On Canada's east coast, in St. Andrews by the Sea, David Welch has his dream job found.

No one ever went overboard!

Dave does not have a formal education for his job: he has partly read his knowledge, partly learned through observation and experience. That's pretty good: at the preliminary meeting, he can tell us details from the life of the whales that one might think he was a marine biologist.

Dave can also operate his Zodiac inflatable boat as if he had never done anything else. He countered critics dryly: "So far, no tourist has ever gone overboard."

Originally a media manager

At the same time, Dave had originally done a training in mediamanagement since also worked. Later, he was appointed to the Canadian Government's administrative organization in the capital, Ottowa.

When he met 1995 a whale watcher with a zodiac dinghy in British Columbia on the Canadian west coast, he saddled briefly and founds his company Fundytiderunners.

Re-launching is becoming increasingly important

The colleague from BC helped him a lot when Dave told him he wanted to copy his idea to the other side of the country: "I wasn't a competition - he explained everything to me." Nevertheless, it was all "a lot of work" . But it was worth it: To this day, Dave is the only one who offers whale watching with a Zodiac inflatable boat on the east coast.

The ability to start a new job every few years is not a shortcoming for the Canadian, but an important and necessary skill: "I've tried quite a few jobs in my life, I'm already over 50," he says and is convinced : “To have a job all your life, maybe that was possible for our parents. But today it doesn't work anymore. "
