Video interview via Skype & Co: 7 tips for remote recruiting

What do you think of job interviews on Skype? The majority of applicants consider this to be newfangled nonsense and often only assume that they will get to know each other briefly before the “real” personal job interview on site.

Interviews via Skype

Well prepared in the discussion talk with Videotelefonie

If you underestimate the video interview, you can sit back and relax - there will be no personal conversation for you afterwards. For this, another candidate has qualified ...

A successful video interview begins with the right attitude to this - admittedly: still relatively new - conversation medium. Look forward to it, be well prepared and take the chance to tell your wish-maker already in this way, why you are exactly the right occupation for the free position.

1. Preparation is half the (application) life

In terms of content, an interview with Skype is hardly different from a personal interview. Organizationally, however, there are some aspects to consider for a professional presentation:

  • Have the contact details with the HR replaced?
  • Are your profile name and profile image sufficient for a professional contact?
  • Do your privacy and / or status settings make the person's call?

Clarify in advance who is calling whom and - just in case - keep the phone number and Emailaddress of your contact person.

Tip: Text as PDF (please read the instructions!) or to this text complete eCourse or series Download. Actions or news via Newsletter!

2. Technical aspects should not be underestimated

The impression of your presentation depends to a great extent on the technical conditions. Even if you've been a hundred times before - have a look at the most important aspects just before the interview:

  • Quality of the Internet connection: connect the LAN cable, if necessary, or change the position to the W-LAN router
  • Volume of the microphone and the loudspeaker
  • Video quality in lighting: not too bright and not too dark
  • Start the computer early and close all other programs: You do not want to experience the automatic shutdown moment due to a system update ...

3. Adequate clothing

In addition, keep all important documents and utensils from Curriculum vitae via the job profile to the handkerchief, inconspicuously ready. Under no circumstances should you leave your seat during the conversation.

Dress up adequately for a presentation date. Whether you wear a pants or not is a question of inner attitude, not a question of camera excerpt.

4. Show presence

In the appointment itself, you must pay particular attention to the fact that you speak clearly, observe delays in the transmission and have the conversation partner talked out. Otherwise, important information may remain on the track.

In any case, it is more than legitimate to ask in a video call if you have not understood something correctly. You can even use the excuse "acoustically not understood" if you want to gain a moment to answer a question ...

5. Please do not touch!

You must not hide behind your computer. Be present and usually look at the camera. Unnecessary movements divert content. On the other hand, you should not be frozen on the screen of the recruiter.

If you need something to help you calm down, make handy notes. Typing on the PC keyboard produces a lot of noises, which should be avoided.

6. Focus on the audio channel

Video function or not: the audio channel, say: What you say is crucial. The technical quality should also be right here.

Therefore, make sure that no family members, pets or outside noise (windows open?) Cause loud or visual distraction. And check the microphone again.

7. The right background

Choose a neutral background in your apartment, which does not appear to be kaleidoscope or book-colored.

A simple picture often helps. The recruiter should hang on your lips and not think about whether the AC / DC poster is on your or your son's wall.

Summary

Do not be afraid of a job interview with Skype: With good preparation and a bit of anticipation, you can show a strong presence and gain a lot of positive points.

By the way, you also show the recruiter that you can best handle modern communication technologies. This competence can hardly be better presented than in a video interview and is often underestimated. Good luck with the conversation. You will like it.
