Goodbye to Homeoffice?
For years, the mobile office has been the key to the working world of the future - and what employees want from their employers. According to Yahoo, however, the reintroduction of the presence obligation among the employees is well received. The staff appreciated the opportunity to walk the office and meet colleagues at the office. Was a change of direction begun with the reintroduction of the presence obligation? And what is the real thing for (future) employees?
If you ask the students in Germany on this topic, it shows that flexible working conditions are not so much in demand, as is often assumed. Only a good fifth of students in a survey conducted by employer-branding consultancy Universum among more than 34 000 students said home-office was important to them.
Work-life balance and job security key career goals
Let's take a look at the long-term career goals - and thus the ongoing theme of work-life balance. As the Universum Student Survey 2015 shows, the high esteem for a balanced work-life balance remains unbroken. More than half of the students, more precisely 55 percent, named this as one of their key career goals.
But what does work-life balance mean for the students? If you ask them what they associate with this term, they say in the first place that family and career planning do not bother (40 percent) and that the Company to provide a positive working environment (30 percent). Also financial stability (25 percent), flexible working hours (24 percent) and sufficient free time (21 percent) are associated with the term work-life balance. Flexible working conditions, such as being able to work from the home office, are only linked to the term work-life balance by 19 percent of respondents.
What makes an attractive employer?
In order to find out which qualities make an attractive employer, Universum has asked students about the criteria by which they judge companies as employers.
The result: Employers are particularly sought after if they offer an attractive basic salary and a high income in the future if there is the possibility of taking management tasks and if the companies are a good reference for the future career. Also the company culture and the social environment are important to the students: in particular a friendly work environment as well as recognition of achievement.
Automotive industry most attractive industry
And which sectors and companies are ahead? By far the most attractive sector for students is the automotive industry. One in three business-related subjects would like to work for a car manufacturer. The reason is a simple one: the carmakers offer what the young talents want.
They stand for a good salary, pleasant working conditions and safety. For students of economics, this year's BMW ranking is the most attractive employer. Audi, Porsche, Google and Volkswagen will follow the other places. Audi will be able to defend its top position in the previous year and be able to compete against BMW, Porsche, Volkswagen and Daimler / Mercedes-Benz, which occupy second and fifth place.
Business consultants are now also interesting for junior engineers
Business consultancy has always been popular among economics students. Over the past eight years, McKinsey has always been among the twelve most attractive companies in Germany, and is ranked eighth in the top ten this year. But the times in which only the economists who were approached felt that they were approached by the business consultations are over. The company consultants will also be more interesting for future engineers.
In their ranking, McKinsey advances 13 positions this year and is now ranked 28. The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) also makes a big leap forward and reaches place 39, an improvement around 33 positions. With the company consultancy, new competitors are emerging for the mechanics, the traditional employers of the newcomers. The struggle for talent is getting tougher, and employers have to make more clear than before in the past, which makes them different from their competitors.
Duty, not frustration: the establishment of an employer brand
But precisely at this point there are considerable deficits. While it is generally known that it is crucial to the success of a company to win the right employees. What is astonishing, however, is that many companies do not have an effective strategy to compete for the best talent.
Often, the problem is that the company has not profiled as an employer brand. At the same time, a strong employer brand reduces the costs for new hires by half and reduces the employee fluctuation by more than a quarter. Building an employer brand is simply a good investment.
