Men tend to overestimate their own abilities. At the same time, they underestimate the abilities of others. And miss the opportunity for cooperation. Women, on the other hand, often rely less on their own abilities than on their environment.

  Profile

Women prefer teamwork

To be cooperative is clearly a female characteristic. This is confirmed by John Gerzema and Michael D'Antonio in their book “The Athena Doctrine”. 32.000 people in 13 countries around the world should rate 125 characteristics as male, female or neutral.

To be cooperative was unambiguously classified as a female virtue. Other studies also show that women prefer to work in teams, while most men prefer self-responsibility

The ideal modern leader is cooperative

The study of the above authors also shows that being cooperative is one of the ten most important strengths of a contemporary executive. Have male executives now gone out? Certainly not.

Rather, this is a strong sign Company which working environment both men and women want and which behaviors leaders need to focus on.

The inner attitude

Cooperation begins with the inner attitude. The reasons why women prefer co-operation with the competition are valuable indications. Women naturally assume that, in a co-operative environment, their results are enhanced by working together with others.

To what extent this is materially worthwhile for them is of secondary importance. The reality spiegelt that: women are clearly overrepresented in the non-profit sector and underrepresented in the finance sector and management positions in large companies.

Even men cooperate ... if it is worthwhile (for them)!

In an attempt, the participants were allowed to choose whether they would like to work in a team or on their own. Clearly more women than men opted for teamwork.

In the next step there was a reward for excellent teamwork. When the number increased to ten percent, so many men decided for the team as well as for women.

Balance

In order to cooperate successfully, we must maintain the basic principle that the contributions of all team members are equally important: our own and those of the others.

We should not fall into the trap of expert faith. Even the fresh or unconventional look of a newcomer or a foreigner can reveal traps and inspire new creativity.

Check your posture in 2 steps

  1. Do you tend to put your light under the bushels and share your ideas very late or not at all?
  2. Or do you basically assume that you have the right or better solution and place it at the center of communication?

The multiperspectival view helps

Without immediately looking at the outcome, it is easier to invest time and attention. Finding the right measure here influences the way in which cooperation is worthwhile.

As soon as we understand that a multiperspectivist view leads to more tolerable and sustainably better decisions, we cease to regard the output of cooperation purely materially.

Openness and clear language

Cooperations are particularly successful when

  • Objectives and expectations of stakeholders are clearly defined at an early stage,
  • developed a common vision and
  • is evaluated at regular intervals to determine whether the cooperation still meets these agreements.

If this is not the case, this divergence must be addressed in order to overcome conflicts arising from this and to put cooperation back on track.

men and women

Being cooperative does not only create a better working environment. Cooperation is the breeding ground for creativity and innovation.

Only through the cooperative cooperation of all participants can the increasingly complex tasks be successfully mastered. It can succeed in the bundling of both female and male skills.
