What is the Meeting Trophy?
I would like to participate in a real teambuilding action, preferably a well-known company, whose locations I have already visited. However, as they are known, they are reluctant to look over their shoulders at their more or less intimate events.
I was all the more enthusiastic about the idea of accompanying event organizers - the professionals who organize such events for companies - live and in color for three days. Being accompanied by journalism, watching in peace and taking pictures, could not be the subject: I was much more in the middle of the action.
On the way from Lugano via St. Moritz to Zurich, this meant that for three days, various tasks such as pedal boating, food tasting, snowballing or panning were solved. In the meantime there were all sorts of knowledge questions to answer, and in the end, a victorious team, in the case of Belgium, stood firm.
We used all possible means of transport: airplane, train, boat, postal bus, bike, car, Panormazug and tram. On the spot, I would like to praise the logistical mastery of the Swiss organizers: in other countries, these procedures would have gone so far with so many participants.
Team building processes
Eight national teams competed against each other, incidentally at the same time as the football World Cup. How quickly in this way a group and we feeling against the others arises surprised me. Unfortunately, there was little time to exchange views with participants from other countries.
The whole thing was playful and loose, it was not really about something, but nevertheless gave a good impression of how it is when such events colleagues compete against competitors and employees against bosses.
What do such events bring?
The psychological processes were extremely exciting: everyone wants to be part of the team and to contribute something to their success. The fear of failing and stupidly standing in front of the others always resonates and even if everyone takes it easy, there is always something like an implicit peer pressure - because nobody wants to be guilty in the end if the team loses.
In addition, it is interesting to see who takes over which role: one is taken for granted as a bell tower, the other gets the burned coal out of the fire when the colleague fails. From this it is easy to draw conclusions about character traits and behavior in the job. Unlikely that you act completely differently in the job!
What brings Teambuilding?
This is exactly what shows that such team building events are more than nice games, happy eating and drinking and a little distraction from work: they weld together, ideally increasing trust in each other and identification with the team Company - and thereby increase motivation and productivity.
Incidentally, I have let the pros tell me that it does not always have to be expensive and time-consuming scenarios: The best way to get started is to play simple games with the customers - and if it's just a matter of salami, as in Lugano node.
