Equally important for young professionals is a balance between work and private life, followed by job security and the intellectual challenge. Also in demand: a demanding job, a wide range of work tasks and the recognition of performance.

Attractive base salary

Overview

One Company, which offers an attractive basic salary, is appreciated by all young professionals, but especially by young professionals with a scientific background. Among young scientists, nearly two-thirds of respondents (64 percent) said that a base that is competitive compared to other companies makes a business particularly attractive to them.

For the young professionals with an economic background, the figure is 61 percent, the young engineers 58 percent, and the IT experts 53 percent of the respondents who consider the attractive basic salary to be particularly important for a positive assessment of the employer.

Work-life balance remains the most important career goal

A balanced relationship between work and the private, ie the work-life balance, has been the main career goal for young professionals for several years, followed by job security and the intellectual challenge. The work-life balance is especially appreciated among young professionals with a scientific background:

For 72 percent of respondents with this background, the work-life balance is one of the three most important career goals. However, the work-life balance is also ranked first among the young professionals with an economic and engineering background, as well as among the IT experts, and is said to be a career goal by more than half of the respondents.

Job security is gaining importance

Overview

The goal of pursuing a secure and stable job is also gaining in importance, and for the first time, it takes the second pillar of the career targets across all respondents. Just like the work-life balance, job security as a career target among the young professionals with a scientific background is particularly high:

For 62 percent of young scientists, this is one of the most important career goals. Among the young engineers, job security by 55 is called per cent of the interviewees as an important career goal, among the young IT experts it is 48 percent and among young professionals with an economic background 47 percent.

Job satisfaction continued to increase - nevertheless high willingness to change

Overview

Satisfaction with the current workplace is generally at a high level among young professionals and has continued to increase in comparison to previous years. On a ten-point scale, it is on average 7,2 points (2012: 7,0, 2011: 6,8) across all respondents. The young professionals with an IT background are the most satisfied group (7,6 points) - both male and female computer scientists.

The willingness to change jobs is relatively high despite the high level of satisfaction with the current job: More than a third want to change the job within the next year, more than half within the next one to two years. Only about a fifth of respondents (22 percent) say they do not want to change employers.

The high willingness to move is also reflected in the expectations regarding the number of employers in the course of their careers. Only two percent of respondents believe that they will only work for a single company in the course of their professional life. On the other hand, 60 percent of the interviewees assume that they will change the employer at least two to five times. A quarter believes they will work at six to nine companies.
