Professionals without a university degree?
The academization of our working world is progressing: Where in the past often a vocational training sufficed, it must all too often be a completed study. But Company who, for whatever reason, complain about a shortage of skilled workers, are well advised to rethink and also target well-educated professionals without a university degree. In addition to commitment, they often bring with them practical experience.
But what makes companies inverse for this target group at all attractive? To find this out, we interviewed professionals without a university degree, which career goals they pursue, and which companies are particularly high in their favor.
Job security before work-life balance
While a balanced work-life balance has been the most important career goal for students and young professionals with an academic background for years, young professionals have no academic background, and the goal is to pursue a safe and stable job in the first place. About three-quarters of the experts said in the survey that job security is particularly important to them.
Looking at female and male professionals separately, women's desire for job security is even more pronounced than in men: job security is a particularly important career goal for 81 percent of women but only for 71 percent of male professionals. Second place in the long-term career targets is a balanced work-life balance. It is seen as a particularly important career goal by more than half of respondents. Being a leader with a leadership role is an important career target for two-fifths of respondents. Less is an international career and community orientation.
What are the expectations of the company?
If you ask the experts what makes them an attractive employer, they have an attractive basic salary, a high income in the future, and recognition of achievement at the top of the wish list. Also a secure employment, a friendly work environment and respect for the employees are important drivers of the employer's tract.
An inspiring manager is someone who develops and promotes them in their personality, who has a good management style, communicates openly and sets clear goals. Particularly sought-after benefits include the company's share of the company's profits, support for retirement provisions and bonus payments.
The preferred size of the specialists is medium-sized companies with 100 to 500 employees. For a medium-sized company as the next employer, one-third of the interviewees spoke out.
But even very large companies with more than 1000 employees and large companies with 500 to 1000 employees are popular - they are the favorites of about a quarter and a fifth of the respondents. The very small companies with fewer than 10 employees are having a hard time: they are only wanted by 4 percent of respondents as the next employer.
Mostly satisfied, one fifth willing to change
More than half of the skilled workers are satisfied with their companies, and about 40 percent of the respondents say that they are not interested in changing employers.
Nevertheless, 18 percent of the specialists are interested in a change within the next 12 months. Asked what they would do to apply for another job, the overwhelming majority (79 percent) says that a change would be possible if they were offered a better salary.
Automotive industry most attractive industry
As in the rankings of students and professionals with an academic background, companies in the automotive industry are among the leaders in the rankings, even among specialists without a university degree. In both the commercial and technical professions, the builders are the center of excellence.
Audi, BMW and Volkswagen are ahead, followed by Google in fourth place, ProSiebenSat1.Media in fifth place and Porsche in sixth place. The Bundeswehr takes seventh, followed by Siemens, Deutsche Lufthansa and IKEA Germany. Audi, Porsche and BMW are ahead in the technical area, followed by Volkswagen, Google, Siemens, Daimler / Mercedes-Benz, Lufthansa Technik, BASF and the Bundeswehr.
Make tailor-made offers to skilled workers
Even if the rankings of the top companies differ only in detail from specialists and academics, companies should remember that specialists have significantly different expectations from employers than academics.
This is a challenge for company executives, as they must inspire both talents with a university degree as well as specialists for their tasks and their companies. It is only when the companies succeed in making suitable offers and coordinating their wishes to their wishes that they will be able to meet their needs in the future.
