A special training for startup employees - why? Because entering a tech startup has different conditions to a traditional job, says Andrew Hoag, Managing Director Europe at the Startup Institute.

start-up education

Here writes for you:

Andrew Hoag has been Managing Director Europe at the Startup Institute Berlin since November 2013. The Startup Institute is the leading US career accelerator for startups. Participants learn the skills and mindset there.

How does traditional vocational training work?

Basically, the traditional German (education) system works: it prepares for lifelong learning and shows how knowledge can be acquired. The accusation that there is not enough insight into professional practice is, on the other hand, no one who is solely concerned with the German system.

In many countries it is common to learn the real “work” only during the first job. After all, there are already some certified internship and trainee programs in Germany for starting your career.

Other conditions apply to start-ups

But for a successful entry into the start-up scene, today's professional skills have to bring with them a lot that go far beyond the standards of the world of work:

Instead of a slow rise, a continuous increase in responsibility and lengthy training, Day 1 includes the right knowledge and skills as well as a large network for working in a young tech company.

Chaotic environment, no fear of mistakes

The work environment in a startup is chaotic by nature, so its employees have to be flexible, curious and decisive.

Above all, they must not be afraid of mistakes, but must face the challenge of becoming increasingly self-sufficient through themselves. This is in stark contrast to the traditional career in the large corporation.

Guaranteed for nerve-racking experiences

Just settle for the next best startup, just to get into a hip fast Company getting started is almost a guarantee for a time- and nerve-racking experience:

On the one hand it is difficult to get a job under the stars of the German startup scene if you do not have the necessary network, on the other hand, the fast-paced startup business overpowered inexperienced employees - worst of all, the alleged career phase ends in a quick termination.

Startup hopping is also not a solution

And startup hopping from one employer to another is also not a solution. So how do potential startup employees avoid getting a foothold and stumbling over their own claims?

Therefore, a suitable training can be helpful. The training period does not have to be long, on the contrary:

Compressed knowledge from practice

The knowledge from several years of professional experience in the startup scene, compressed in a few months, is sufficient for an optimal and purposeful preparation for the work in a startup. Teachers who are active in the scene also offer direct access to the startup ecosystem as well as the insight.

Even the greatest challenge in a young company, the ability to deal with mistakes and learn from them, can be learned.

Learn to deal with mistakes

Precisely because the traditional education system does not provide for such a lack, an important aspect of the professional life of a young company is missing.

In our programs at Startup Institute, for example, we use projects as exercises that were “designed” to fail from the start. This helps young talents to grapple with their fear of failure and build self-confidence at the same time, since the situation in “real” professional life would no longer be completely new.

The chaos is played back

Even the chaos in a young tech company can be easily followed up in a start-up training and then restrained: life-changing work situations from the company are imitated, just like moments in the daily business, in which no one has time to explain more precisely.

How do you best deal with such situations? What instruments are suitable to balance or even manage the chaos at least?

What a startup training does

What was previously only possible via the famous “Learning by Failing” could now be used for training for start-up employees who impart the mindset, skills and network of the industry.

In this way, it could make a decisive contribution to the fact that more people have a better picture of their expectations at a startup, know what they want and what they are likely to be most successful in.
