Where is the playing field
Observation helps you to score points pragmatically in order to position yourself well and to see where the field is at all.
A good stage for strolling is, for example, departmental meetings. Here are the seven most important rules for securing your own terrain during meetings and presentations:
Secure your own terrain
- Log in to any meeting.
- Say "me".
- Do not think loud.
- Never speak negatively about yourself.
- Do not keep up with formalistic details.
- Point with numbers.
- Set other verbal boundaries.
Field research in the workshop
Somewhat more relaxed and with more distance than in your own department, the power mechanism can be used during workshops and seminars with participants from different Company observe.
There, everyone meets again and are basically equal - right? For your next training visit the observer position and answer the following questions in writing:
Ranking and group behavior
- Who is asking the most questions?
- Who takes the informal position of a co-coach?
- Who wants to change formalities such as the breaks?
- Who brings counter-arguments?
- How long does it take to get a ranking?
- What is the exact ranking of the seminar participants?
- What place do you find yourself again?
- How does the ranking change in the course of a seminar?
- Which strategies of the participants are successful?
Adopt male behavioral patterns?
Many women have not figured out the top dog system and are subject to a dangerous mistake if they want to change their behavior.
They believe that getting the job done means standing in the way of male top dogs and confronting them in order to bring their own issues to light.
Confrontation is not the solution
However, this is only useful if they actually want to attack a real power struggle against the stalks. This can sometimes be useful, but in most cases it is not.
Rolling games during coaching or in workshops can provide valuable feedback here as to whether the point of view was too aggressive or not at all audible. Both are often the case with women because they have too little practice to put their own position.
Do not fancy ranking games?
Again and again I hear from women that this is too useless, annoying and time-consuming. They do not feel like stepping into such ranking games.
This is, on the one hand, understandable: from the feminine point of view of the hierarchy of authority, this is unnecessary - and in pure women's minds one can also afford this view.
The minority does not determine the rules of the game
Then the female members work together constructively and effectively, discussing the factual without having to spend time on profiling shows.
Unfortunately, as a minority in men's teams, the rules of the game are unfortunately not determined. And renouncing positioning battles means you find yourself on the very last place in the hierarchy. This will be of little use in advancing the issues that matter to you.
Micropolitics can be fun
On the other hand, there are a lot of women, who have a lot of practice when they can score points in the micropolitical game.
Finally, there are also female boxers and poker players. Even if this is not directly comparable with a manager post, it shows that women are not limited in their behavioral spectrum.
