Service is service ...
Is also normal. After all, these people go to work - and work is just - work. After all, we have learned from childhood on: "Service is service and liquor is schnapps". This old folk wisdom wants to say that you have to separate both sides - work and leisure - clearly.
This may have been possible earlier, but today it is a utopia for most people. You are often reachable in the evening until you fall asleep and in the morning the first glance is not the smart person on the other bedside, but the smart phone on the night table. In addition, we all have only one brain and take it home from work - and thus also the worries and tendencies of the work.
Finally do something "meaningful"
In my role as a coach, I meet many people around the 40 who come to me and say that they have actually achieved a lot in the job - but now want to do something "meaningful". I often ask why you work. Most respond indignantly or unsettled, because you have to earn money ... Sure. We all have to.
But the money is actually only the result of it. Why do not we learn now that what you do every day for eight to twelve hours could also be fun? Yes I know. This statement is "dangerous" because now many would say that it is not so easy and that life is not a pony farm after all - but rather a labor-intensive pig farm.
Resigned for a long time
And yet I ask you: If you could choose completely freely: What would you like to work every day? Many, many people have no answer. But not because the question is impossible to answer, but rather because you have never thought very long about this important question (probably one of the most important questions at all).
We never took any time for it. Have resigned to us with the condition as it is. We usually do not force us to do this work every day, and we'll probably be able to defend ourselves.
Why are you working?
What it takes to discover this important secret? Time, a block of paper, a pen and a tea (wine goes as well). Further questions for this session would be:
- Why are you working?
- What is the purpose behind your work?
- What is the meaning behind your service or product?
I know this sounds very mundane. And perhaps because it sounds so banal, few people take time for it ...
Call of duty
We learn in our education that we have to do something to get something. Money, fame, recognition. That's not bad - because those are all nice things. But we rarely question why we do what we do. And that is exactly what affects you over the years.
We are less and less fond of working, we are less and less resigned and end up at the DNV (service according to regulation). Many of them stay here - but more and more people are looking for the meaning - and define their career completely new. With new priorities. Based sense.
Popular guiding principles
Let's go back to the Company, There are often beautifully framed models in the hallways - especially in the entrance area, since it is there that most customers really perceive. And often, one reads very often interchangeable phrases like: "The employees are our focus," "We are customer-oriented" or "We are innovative and traditional and stand for quality". Nice.
Whenever I ask 10 employees which values are in "their" mission statement, unfortunately one often realizes that they are more likely to be suffering - because the employees do not have the faintest mist what is written on this framed glossy paper. In the few models is written, what is the purpose of the company. Again, I do not mean to make money - this is, as I said, only the result of it. If you can communicate the meaning - to employees and customers, this is the ideal case. An "ideal case" that must become the "normal case" in the near future.
