Starting a business as an alternative to permanent employment

Who does not know that? Over a hundred applications sent and still no permanent employment in prospect. For this reason, more and more academics are choosing the path to self-employment.

Before you venture into the cold water, you should self-critically review your personal, professional and entrepreneurial suitability. If in doubt, ask your friends and see if your self-perception matches the perception of others.

Advantages of self-employment

The founding of the business is a real alternative and brings many advantages: one decides what one deserves his money, can determine his working time himself and works in his own pocket.

But self-employment raises many questions: Am I at all a type of founder? How to plan and finance a foundation? What legal issues do I have to consider?

But: being independent means "yourself" and "constantly"

Before jumping into the cold water, you should be informed in detail about the opportunities and risks of starting a business.

  • What should I offer?
  • Who would buy my service / work?
  • How much do I have to earn a month to live on?

The first questions make it clear what entrepreneurs have to deal with on a daily basis.

Differences to permanent employment

In a fixed position, such things are settled, and you just have to do your work. As an entrepreneur, you are responsible for running the company. From marketing to accounting to tax, as a founder, you have a lot to do. Optimum organization is an important basis for a successful foundation.

You do not have a boss who pushes you around, no fixed working hours or unpleasant colleagues. Everyone has their luck in their own hands - just the freedom to realize themselves.

Personal fitness

An essential success is your own personality. Not everyone is suitable for entrepreneurs, after all, the own products or services do not sell themselves. In addition to the appropriate expertise, a start-up entrepreneur must also master the proper dealings with customers, make successful sales talks and motivate himself and his staff.

Check beforehand whether your skills as an entrepreneur are already sufficient. If you have any doubts or find any deficits, speak to an experienced advisor. You can acquire and expand the missing knowledge in individual coaching or in corresponding seminars. Tips on the topic: "How do I find the right training" can be found here.

Technical suitability

Anyone wishing to start a business should know the relevant industry and bring with them the necessary specialist knowledge.

In addition to legal requirements, the founder should also have basic business knowledge in order to succeed in the market. The following checklist should help you to check your professional suitability:

  • Do you have a suitable vocational training?
  • Do you have the appropriate expertise?
  • Are you familiar with your industry?
  • Have you already gained a sales experience?
  • Do you fulfill the legal requirements for the desired activity?
  • Can you conduct sales talks with customers, banks, suppliers?
  • Are you familiar with the purchasing department?
  • Are you familiar with accounting?
  • Are you familiar with the areas of cost accounting, controlling and dunning?
  • Do you have basic knowledge in the fields of company and income tax?
  • Do you have basic marketing skills?

Entrepreneurial Fitness

You need basic business and business knowledge in order to run a business successfully. To think economically is difficult, especially for academics. It is not enough to deliver good services if the cost-benefit calculation is not right. In almost every business, you have to weigh whether it's worth the work.

However, any gaps in knowledge should not prevent you from realizing your dream of having your own company. You can fill these gaps with targeted qualification measures. Tips on the topic: "How do I find the right training" can be found here.

Great article! I am just thinking about whether I am self-employed as a programmer. Unfortunately, I am planning something and therefore my biggest problem is the order. For this reason, I would probably try to look for another place to work occasionally. Has anyone had experience with It is important for me that I have my own office, which I do not have to share, because I am very dependent on my concentration. At the same time I would like to have the opportunity to receive potential customers to show that I am a serious business partner. Has anyone in a comparable position as a tip for me how you solve the office question?
