The self-efficacy conviction is one of the best studied human characteristics in psychology. Does the person who opposes us hold her own destiny, and that through her own behavior she can change herself and the things surrounding her for the better? If so, the self-efficacy is.

Psychologically well researched

Overview

The fact that the self-efficacy conviction is so well researched is due in particular to the fact that psychological research is once a disease-related research and we therapists know that the success of a therapy depends to a very great extent on this resilience factor

You have probably already had close contact with a person, a good friend, a partner, someone from your family, who has been struggling to process a separation or perhaps a dismissal.

Yes but…

Overview

They have probably tried to understand the situation, have given the person tips and advice on what they can do to make her feel better.

You may remember that the person has repeatedly told you, "Yes, you are right, but I can not forget him / her," or, "I can not do that, I have no strength for it And besides, that does not make any sense anyway. "

Hopeless or lack of self-efficacy?

Overview

You probably gave up after a few, usually long, frustration, maybe you even gave up the contact with the person. It seemed to her no use.

What the person was missing was nothing more than a good self-efficacy, so the conviction that she can change something about her situation.

No sacrificial roll!

Overview

Again, this factor is important in two ways. First, of course, because highly resilient people have a firm conviction that can be very well expressed with the following sentence: "I am not a victim, but creator of my world!"

They also rarely go into this victim's role as victims. This would paralyze them because they would then blame external factors beyond their control for making them feel emotionally ill.

Always keep control!

Overview

What highly resilienated people gain with their self-efficacy is, besides a feeling of serenity in dealing with the adversities of life, a sense of control over themselves and the emotional state in which they are.

They are almost always convinced that they hold the "notebook of their lives" in their own hands.

All a question of attitude

Overview

The second reason why this factor matters is directly related to you as a reader of this book. Especially if yours resilience want to develop further.

As an attentive reader, you will not have missed the fact that a large number of the seven factors mentioned here are linked above all to our attitudes, attitudes and the perspectives that we occupy.

  • Am I able to find an attitude to a situation that makes me feel positive or that the situation is meaningful (emotion control)?
  • Am I someone who sees the glass of water half full or half empty, and I want to change that (Realistic Optimism)?
  • How strong is my willingness to take me once, to listen, to put myself in the skin of the other (empathy)?
  • Or how strong am I willing to end a discipline that I do not like so much, because I know that this will give me a good feeling and bring me closer to my goal (impulse control)?

Change the departed

Overview

We know from psychological and neurobiological research that people through continuous training can also change very deep-rooted attitudes and learn their whole life. The majority of the animals can not do this.

Nothing else is described by the term "personality development". This path can become rocky and tedious, but these attitudes have often consolidated over decades in the form of neural structures in our brains.

On the highway of habit

Overview

There they form the term of the neurobiologist Prof. Dr. Gerald Hüther, heavily used and firmly concreted highways, which are automatically used when we encounter similar situations.

Sometimes, however, they also change very quickly, especially because the benefits of a new attitude were presented to us in a sudden and emotional manner. Things suddenly go much easier than before.

The Journey is the Goal

Overview

Only if you believe that you can change your own attitudes, so if you build up your own self-confidence, you will also confidently put aside the setbacks that you will inevitably face in developing your personal resilience.

In other words: already working on your own resilience will make you a more resilient person.

However, self-efficacy is very limited today: Productivity and efficiency are becoming more and more important in our well-organized and fully automated working life, and people are left behind. A pity!

  2. Karin Meyerhofer

Yes We Can is a great advertising slogan, nothing more.

  3. Eckhard Schölzel

A little is suspicious of this kind of "everything under control": Dominate! A healthy self-efficacy does it simply, is free from doubts, based on grown self-confidence, she does not want to dominate: just do it! It is undoubtedly an important factor to grow in coming crises.
Resilience is m. E. properly tested when things really get out of hand! Real terror, panic! "What can I lean on now?" - "Stay cool! Nothing to show! That's not the case with my resilience quotient! "- ??? Self-confidence, inner peace, true sovereignty - how do you get that?
Self-efficacy conviction - that is, an increased knowledge of one's own strengths and abilities - then helps very much, shimmers almost from the background. Prussian self-control "pull yourself together!" Or "Be the one who needs it here" would rather be an endeavor to maintain a facade of resilience. With such impulses, we are no longer in the salutogenic but already in the psychopathological field: in the long run this results rather in a major collapse.
