Coincidence improves decisions and work: 5 inspiration tips for more creativity

New ideas, creativity and good decisions do not fall from the sky. Rather, they are inspired by other people - often by chance. Although such coincidences can not be controlled, but you can do a lot for it.

Serendipity instead of digital efficiency

Social media, computers and digitalization have made my life more efficient, today, many information can be found quickly and easily, without having to leave the office or home office. Even go shopping can be virtually done digitally and then deliver the food.

Unfortunately, this increasingly prevents things from happening randomly and surprisingly, the so-called serindipity. What can be done to promote this? Getting into unfamiliar, new situations more often, which often means leaving the comfort zone.

The power of chance

Recently, for example, I was in a youth hostel for the first time in years as part of a cooperation with the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Youth Hostel Association - and I am enthusiastic about the ecologically oriented educational offer there.

When I then went for a walk on the beach of Warnemünde, I noticed people who seemingly sucked the beach. Such a nonsense, I thought and addressed the young lady, what that was. It turned out that the alleged beach cleaning was a very efficient environmental project of the University of Rostock. They had thrown biodegradable platelets into the sea, which should bind oil and which were now flushed with the sucked oil to the beach and sucked up there. A method that should also help with larger oil spills, I was told.

Just talk to each other

Recently I got stuck on the way from Copenhagen to Italy in Munich. It was due to a storm that suspended all air traffic in the Munich area. Excitement about the unplanned change of dates was out of place: The involuntary stopover became one of the funniest networking encounters I've ever had. For in the hotel where the airline had accommodated us, people met who otherwise would probably never have gathered:

Employees of the Max Planck Institute, solar energy activists from Bremen and Spanish business people. And since there was nothing to do but wait, we had little choice but to talk. Which brought me personally a whole new set of ideas.

Heterogeneous teams decide better and more creatively

Studies show that ideas and decisions get better when they are in the market Team - and all the more so when the teams are as diverse as possible. However, this is exactly where the rabbit is in the habit of pepper: Many people are too much in their laps, circulating too much in their own circles, even or in times of the Internet.

There is not enough room and time for coincidences and fresh ideas. But the problem is that many people only notice the limitations of everyday life when suddenly massive changes occur and a problem arises. Then suddenly the pressure is there to do something different.

5 Tips: Create space for creativity and chance

So that it does not even get that far, you should approach the change in small steps and also create in everyday life again and again room for creativity and coincidences. But how can you help it on the jumps? Here are some tips.

  1. Do something unusual: Do what you don't normally do. And if it's just a new way to work. New deeds lead to new encounters. And with it new ideas.
  2. Just go alone in the pub: Going alone in the pub looks kind of stupid and is frowned upon. Nonsense. In fact, it leads to unusual encounters. Or also that you can pick up interesting ideas at the next table.
  3. Visit new places: It can also be enough, just to visit new, other places, which one does not know yet and suddenly unimagined discussions arise.
  4. People smile: Also a very good idea to get into conversation with people that I've tried myself before: Just smile at people. For example in public transport.
  5. Leave the comfort zone: All of this presupposes that you leave your comfort zone and simply do something uncomfortable to break down the pathways - also in the brain

All of this can have unforeseen, pleasing consequences, as I have just stated several times.
