Dr. Dirk Bisping is the CEO of the Professional Association for the Self-Employed in Computer Science (BVSI). In the interview, he talked about the opportunities of IT freelancers, people about 45, the self-image of freelancers - and especially how working in mixed teams works. As a freelance IT consultant, Bisping founded his own 24 in October together with 2004 colleagues from the BVSI Company, which has now joined more than 30 members. At BVSI, Bisping is responsible for the operational management of the association and for the program planning and lobbying of the association.
Mr. Dr. Bisping, what are the chances of IT freelancers currently?
The IT sector will grow by the end of 2012 m more than 4 percent. The IT professionals are also benefiting from the boom. The opportunities of SAP, Java, mainframe and security experts are currently excellent. Overall, the prospects for IT freelancers are currently excellent.
Although many companies have their own people ...
We expect the share of freelancers in IT projects to continue to rise. The reason is that companies need highly specialized professionals for specific IT tasks and often can not recruit them from their own IT teams.
The freelancers are therefore the firefighters for companies - can this work?
Consolidation of company knowledge and IT expertise leads to success. This is why many companies increasingly rely on mixed teams of fixed and free IT specialists to effectively bundle company know-how and external IT expertise. When mixed skills are combined with company knowledge and expertise, this results in excellent results.
I have not doubted this - but is cooperation not difficult?
Clearly there are a few things to consider when it comes to the composition of mixed teams, so that the “mix” ultimately leads to success. Basically, employees and freelancers have different interests ...
... and what would they be?
Social recognition within the company is important to the employee; he or she would like to move up the career ladder. The project manager and the employed IT specialists are often heavily involved in departmental meetings, Emailtraffic, conferences - i.e. with project management and administration of the project.
The angstten IT-ler are for you so career-steep Rampensäue?
Well, understandably, the computer scientist employed mainly in the place where his actions become visible, while the external IT specialist is working in the background and is primarily measured by his professional results.
And what is the breakdown of earnings?
The employee knows the company and its image and brings this know-how to the project, while the freelance IT specialist makes his expert knowledge available for the duration of the project. He concentrates on the special task, where he has a high level of detailed and specialist knowledge. As you can see: the interests complement each other! There is also a study on this ...
... for the optimal division of labor between IT freelancers and employees?
No, to the success of mixed teams! The study by the Institute for Employment and Employability from the year 2010 shows that the acceptance of this flexible form of work is increasing. This is also our experience: Many large and increasingly medium-sized companies have had good experiences with mixed teams.
What is the reason?
The IBE study shows that mixed teams respond more quickly to changing requirements (64%) and solve complex problems better (62%). For example, project managers from mixed teams to 72 percent are convinced of the efficiency of mixed teams.
Are there any points of friction when there is simply someone from the outside?
Integration and loyalty problems of external team members hardly played a role, according to the IBE study. The employees benefit from the professional skills of the freelancers and vice versa, the company's know-how helps the freelancers. That is certainly related to experience ...
So a chance for older and experienced professionals?
The majority of IT freelancers are now 45 years old and usually ten years or longer than freelancers. The fact that teamwork often works so well may also depend on the fact that both IT freelancers and IT employees are often very experienced in the project work.
