The publication “The Changing Public - Media, Internet, Journalism” was presented, in which my colleagues Karsten Wenzlaff and Anne Hoffmann from the Institute for Communication in Social Media also contributed, and the article “Digital revenue models for journalism: Pay voluntarily?” Have written.
Discussions were on working conditions and quality
Alice Ströver had already made it clear in the run-up that you wanted to discuss the topic in a very practical way and therefore, at the outset, asked the provocative question as to why no journalist had previously reported on the problems at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport.
This was followed by a lively exchange of blows, especially between Mathias Urbach and Renate Gensch, among other things about working conditions and journalistic quality in publishing houses.
Structural changes in established media institutions
This discussion clearly showed how institutionalized the media industry is in Germany - and that the Internet will have to lead to far greater structural changes in this context than many of today are clear.
The surprise of the evening was for me, by the way, Mathias Urbach, who, as a senior editor of a supraregional daily newspaper, admitted that no media house really has any idea how to earn money on the Internet.

The quality of journalism always says something about the quality of democracy. This is currently shown by the example of Hungary, which is also shown by the democracy movements in the Arab region. But what exactly does quality journalism mean? In some areas of online media, the motto “the faster the better” seems to apply today.
Do classical quality criteria such as independence, neutrality or diversity still exist? Can the swarm intelligence of the Internet produce the necessary quality and thereby take over the democratic function of journalism? Zugspitze asked: Is every blogger, every blogger also a journalist, a journalist?
We want to discuss with our podium guests from the fields of media science, journalism and publishing, as well as from the company employee representation, the framework conditions for journalists. How does journalism training affect the situation, which has changed due to numerous online competitions?
What conditions do publishers need to maintain media companies - with fair wages? How does quality journalism become a selling point? The event is organized in cooperation with the state working group Media, Alliance 90 / Die Grünen Berlin.
