8 Tips for the perfect job application
Some may be a matter of taste, others differ depending on the industry. Nevertheless, there are a few basic rules that apply to all applications and which you should absolutely note. The most important tricks and tricks for a convincing cover letter:
1. The Basics
A good cover letter is short, concise and precise. In addition, it is well structured so that the reader can easily follow. The supreme discipline is to show personality within a given framework and thus to stay in the memory of the HR manager. Convincing, the text is less by indiscriminate details, but by specifically built-in details that are a common thread through the Casting pull. These details may have to do with the personal motivation or special skills, but there are no specific requirements.
Important: class instead of mass. To be successful with a cover letter, you should re-make it for each individual application. Anyone who has details about the company, the advertised job or the field of activity in the text shows that he has dealt with his desired employer and his future role. Spelling and grammar should be applied correctly. No matter how convincing the CV is, negligence mistakes in the form disqualify even the greatest talent. The reason is as simple as understandable. 2. Format, templates and patterns
The cover letter should not be more than a DIN A4 page and should be in PDF format, including the signature and list of attachments. A template can be used for the structure and the layout. Good templates can be found on the net at Staufenbiel.
Formal standards for the cover letter: Font size 12 in a legible font like Arial or Calibri, 1,5-fold line spacing, 2,5cm wide margin on the left. All attachments should be in PDF format and should be clearly named, for example: Application_Position_Vorname_Nachname.pdf.
In principle, it is always possible to give a personal touch to the layout of the application. However, especially creative and unusual applications are not desirable in any industry. Whoever is oriented towards the style of the application and the company's letter, is safe. In the creative industries is noticeable duty, coherent and error-free should the application nevertheless be.
3. The construction: subject line and letterhead
Your own contact information is in the header. Always includes first and last name, eMailaddress and phone number. Following the contact details of the company follow in the address field.
Before it starts with the actual cover letter, the date can be found on the right edge. The subject is always greased, but the word "subject" does not appear.
4. The introduction to the application letter
In the introduction, the applicant reveals how he became aware of the position or the company. In addition to a job vacancy, this can be a recommendation or a previous internship. If you already had contact with the company by telephone, the introduction is the right place to start.
5. The main part: motivation and abilities
The applicant's personal motivation and qualifications should play a central role. No one wants to read a re-enumeration of the CV. Abilities and skills that fit the job profile should be worked out - only in this way does the reader gain an impression as to whether the candidate could be the right candidate for a vacancy. A mere listing of one's own qualities is not the means of choice. Instead, the skills should be filled with experience or hard facts. Experience with agile software development? Then the corresponding project should be mentioned. Details that relate to individual stations in the curriculum provide a more meaningful picture of the candidate's skills and increase the credibility. Also references from former superiors can be used for this purpose.
It is important that personnel can clearly read the personal motivation for the application in the company from the application letter. Why is the concrete position a development for the candidate? If you want to re-orient yourself, what is the goal? Only those who demonstrate their own interest in the role and the company are eligible as candidates for a vacancy.
6. Content presentation and availability
If salary expectations are explicitly requested, these should be placed in the key of the cover letter. Often forgotten but very important: information on availability. What is the earliest date for the first day of the new job? Without these mandatory details, the personnel department does not know what time frame they need to calculate in case of doubt.
7. Digital signature
Even if the application is sent digitally, the cover letter should be signed. A digital signature can be created with different tools (also freeware). In case of doubt, you can also help with paper and pencil: signed on a white sheet, photographed and inserted into the document in high resolution (300dpi), then saved as PDF. Attention: bigger than 5 MB should be the eMail including the application documents in no case.
8. Application via online portal
When applying via an application portal, very individual rules often apply. Depending on the portal, explicit specifications are made in which form the candidate information is to be submitted. A digital signature is often omitted here. If a cover letter is required, but otherwise the same rules and principles apply as in the application by eMail.
Whether an application is successful depends, of course, primarily on qualifications and personal suitability. However, if you take the above-mentioned tips to heart, it certainly increases the likelihood of being among many applications and being invited to the meeting. I wish you success!
