Once for confession please?
Mr. Bock built crap. His first designs for market analysis, commissioned by the board last week, have been lying in his drawer for days. He just does not come out of the bags. Tonight the analysis should be finished. Now it is 15 clock and it is sun-clear: That will be nothing more.
Like a pile of misery, Mr. Bock now sits with his piece of work in his boss's office and confesses everything to him.
Just do not be rude!
Mr. Pfaff is terrified: missing data is missing, the charts are hastily grouped together, and the whole thing is bursting with spelling mistakes. But also the poor guy's head wash? After all, he has indeed turned to him trustingly and is so already contrite enough. Now coming with sanctions would be a breakthrough!
Mr. Pfaff reassures poor Mr. Bock: Somehow he will turn this around with the board. He basks in the knowledge that all his employees have the utmost confidence in him. It is needed - a good feeling, even if it's just about holding hands.
Confessors are comfortable and irresponsible
Unfortunately, Mr. Pfaff has forgotten that it is his job to demand performance. Consequences for lack of performance? No way! That would be authoritarian and absolutely yesterday. Moreover, forbearance is lighter, more comfortable and cuddly. Does Mr Pfaff take himself seriously at all? Or has he just missed his profession?
His staff got spiked very quickly: If you confess the boss their small and big sins, they get - schwupps - immediate absolution. Forced to mutually forbidden indulgence but does not testify to greatness but merely proves leadership weakness and pulls with absolute certainty problems. Problems with the employees, who relax and do less and less.
And problems with all the employees who do their job properly. Because they will feel less and less pleasure. The inhibition threshold to deliver lousy quality sinks into the bottomless. And eventually there is a big bang. Not by Mr. Pfaff, who will then build wellness fields somewhere else. Someone else will come with the ax - and leave a trail.
No confession without repentance
Confession without penance does not work. Do not protect your employees from the consequences of their actions. That's unfair and disrespectful. Because even if individuals or even a whole Team is used to be unpunished inefficient, will eventually If, on the other hand, you specify a clear line, an imbalance can not even arise.
With clarity I do not mean an authoritarian attitude! Whoever is authoritarian leaves his employees no room for maneuver. Clarity means: I as a boss has everything in mind. And if the work is not done, I will intervene. With such a requirement, the employees know exactly what they are. And they have the chance to stop any possible misconduct.
