New job: How to get started for employees and Company

For the new employee, tension and expectations of the new work environment, colleagues and tasks almost automatically become part of the new job. Also for the company, the onboarding of a new employee means special circumstances, at least if the induction phase is to be used successfully and optimum preparation for the future work routine is to be given.

Both sides benefit from this and faster assignment to the task area can be guaranteed as well as an overview of the company processes and structures. Therefore, certain points have to be followed to help the new employees get off to a good start.

Onboarding: prevent difficulties and misunderstandings with appropriate training

Regardless of previous experience or qualifications, the first few days of work in all occupations and at every career stage are immensely important in order to get to know the individual processes of a company and to prevent misunderstandings. But it is not only through structured processes that the employer can ensure orientation and a quick arrival at the new workplace, in particular the personal well-being in the new environment usually has the highest priority.

In order to avoid mistakes or misunderstandings in the future work, it is particularly important to get a precise introduction to the most important processes already at the beginning of the activity in the company. Thus, on the one hand the new employee can quickly get used to the new environment, on the other hand, the employer ensures by a good training the smooth flow of current and future work processes.

Training plan and training help you get started

Ideally, therefore, the employer prepares a training plan for the first few working days, in which, among other things, the requirements are compiled and the job is defined, but also skills and knowledge are prioritized. Thus, the employee can follow a guideline, which helps with their own work structuring and planning and provides orientation.

For a most efficient and sustainable induction phase, especially larger companies often offer joint training courses for newcomers or interested colleagues. As a result, in addition to the input of relevant company information, above all, it is possible to establish contacts and to form the first networks in the company. With in-depth training materials available to employees, key points regarding organization, business rules, or workflows can be looked up at any time, and the focus during training can be focused on the overall system rather than on individual details.

Checklist: This is how the first working day becomes a success

For the new employee, however, the first day mostly means nervousness, excitement and often also the feeling of a stimulus and information overload. In order to master this successfully and to score with restrained but motivated behavior, a certain amount of preparation as well as dealing with the new job is crucial. With the following considerations and tips the start succeeds in the new job:

  • Stay calm: Sounds simpler than it is, but almost everyone can sing a song at the start of a job of nervousness, fear of overwork or lack of self-confidence. Nevertheless, it is important to focus on the positive things and to make yourself clear that there is a mutual interest between employer and employee and this consciously decides for a particular candidate.
  • Self reflection: To start more relaxed in the first days, should first be reflected on where your own strengths and weaknesses lie. As a result, the self-confidence is strengthened and at the same time falls a possible self-presentation in a performance in the team through the previously made thoughts easier.
  • Punctuality: Especially on the first day, a little more time should be planned for the journey and a five to ten minutes earlier arrival be targeted. Extreme punctuality, however, usually means only a long wait and thus more time for nervousness.
  • Openness and motivation: Almost inevitably, expectations and ideas about the working atmosphere are part of the first working day. However, it is important not to see them as a condition for successful work, but openness towards the corporate culture, the people behind them and the tasks they have to do.
  • Modesty: Although interest in the job and motivation should be shown, this should not be exaggerated. To eager appearance and exaggerated self-presentation is not good at the colleagues, rather should be set to discreet small talk and casual exchange about the work and previous experience.
  • Engagement: Questions about the work, the company or organizational matters are allowed at any time and show that the corporate culture is taken seriously and internalized. Of course, information about the company should be researched in advance, but it makes a good impression when peculiarities regarding the individual position or the future department are clarified with initiative.
  • Business etiquette: A not inconsiderable part of everyday work is the social components and peculiarities of the way of working and the behavior of colleagues. The following applies: Observing and taking advice and experience of long-term employees or the contact person into account.

Training: Arriving in the team and companies

With these prerequisites the good impression succeeds in the enterprise and in particular with the direct colleagues. These, in turn, are just as motivated and prepared to welcome and welcome the new employee. Because even if the performance and work motivation is especially high at the beginning, the first few weeks are mainly for integration, in order to create lasting loyalty to the company.

Despite training, clarification about the corporate culture and introduction to the company, the first few days are especially important for a pleasant start and an extensive get-to-know phase of the colleagues and the company. To this end, the new colleagues ideally take enough time to help them start their business and introduce their daily work routine.

Teamwork: It depends on the right colleagues and contact persons

Having a lunch together is always a great way to chat and get to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition, larger companies in particular present the individual departments and thus provide a basic orientation of the business processes to enable interdisciplinary work and independent organization. Of course, when the employee arrives, the workplace must be prepared and mail accounts and keys, telephone and other access must be set up.

In addition, mentors and / or contact persons prove themselves again and again as helpful support at the beginning of the activity in another enterprise. This not only serves the professional support in business matters and supports in the accomplishment of complex, arising tasks, it is also with the personal development of the coworker to the side.

Motivation Target performance standards right from the start

This includes, for example, feedback opportunities, networking or support in interpersonal issues. In the case of wishes or problems in particular, regular discussions in a trustworthy environment are indispensable, since only in this way can appropriate solutions be found in good time and good performance can only be achieved through open communication.

At this point, it is a good idea to talk to the mentor and the supervisor about requirements and make them scalable. This not only makes work processes transparent, but also makes it clear from the outset which contribution the employee makes to the company's success. It is also advisable to talk about career opportunities and set milestones at the beginning of the activity. With this motivation in mind, the employee is spurred on in his work and the employer at the same time ensures performance standards and demonstrable success.

New entry: The start in the company decides on successful cooperation

With careful training, the foundation is laid for clean and structured work in the company. In addition to an overview in the company and the clear requirements for the services to be provided, this also includes the personal well-being of the new employee.

Therefore, at the beginning of work, the company should fulfill all requirements that require the work of the new colleague, as well as a structured training plan and, above all, allow sufficient time for getting to know each other and settling in. The employee, with the help of proper preparation and curiosity, can already get started to build a network and create a comfortable working environment with their new colleagues. With the right attitude and anticipation for the upcoming cooperation, the starting signal for the career in the new company will be created.

Proper onboarding is an important, but unfortunately often underestimated topic. Because time is an increasingly scarce good in today's hectic everyday working life. So a really good post, thanks!
