Generation Y - young, wild and insatiable?
As inexperienced as I was, I immediately threw myself into the work and worked into the topic. In the following weeks and months, I read many books on the subject of Generation Y, interviewed many peers and staff officers. I had the plan to write a book based on my findings. But it came differently than thought.
The subject of "Generation Y" became more and more in the background of my interest, because I had begun parallel, to deal with the topic of boxing personality and performance development more intense. And finally, the fascination was so great that I wanted to expand it further.
What makes the Generation Y?
This development gave me the insight that I would act differently in an orientation phase today. First take a break from everyday life for four months and then make a trip around the world to get an idea of what I really want to do.
However, since I have been referred to the topic of Generation Y lately, I would like to use this blog article to share my knowledge with you. So who is Generation Y and what is it?
Generation Y includes the vintages from 1980 to 2000. The attitude of this generation provokes and provokes explosiveness when it clashes with the mindset of the "ancients". The elders do not usually trust the younger ones that they can also tackle and work properly. On the contrary, Generation Y is happy to be lazy and self-centered.
Do not be afraid of Generation Y
If that's the case, it's going to be frightening, as 2020 will already own 50 of the Generation Y global workforce in the year-ago - says at least one study by PriceWaterCoopers.
There is already much to read about this "new generational conflict" on the internet today. However, I think that there have always been differences between generations; and that will not change in the future. The generational conflict is by no means a special topic of Generation Y! Where is the difference to the generations before?
Career yes, but not at any cost
Regarding the common opinions of older generations, Generation Y is lazy, I would like to take a clear position and say: This is absolute bullshit! There are very young people who want to make a career - and lazy people have also had enough in previous generations. The difference lies clearly in the definition of career and success.
"Career" today means something completely different. Today it is less about status symbols, but much more about self-realization of one's goals, dreams and visions. Another key difference is that young people are focusing more on their own health than ever before.
In the minds of the "old", but sometimes even in those of the younger generation, there is still the belief: "Praise be hard, what do you do!" Or "I can not take a break!" private goals can be achieved with hard bandages and at the expense of your own health. This often leads to a health KO in the form of depression or burn-out.
What is success?
An incontrovertible fact is that success can not be defined as a blanket. Everyone understands something else. Generation Y today does not have it easy in many ways.
In our media world, it is flooded with a variety of offers and opportunities - there is too much of everything. Keeping an overview and filtering out which information is personally important and which is not is one of the biggest and not to be underestimated modern challenges.
In addition, young people are being prompted by television formats such as Germany's Next Top Model or Deutschland sucht den Superstar. The fact that most of the candidates have been working hard for their success for years prior to their participation in the show is mentioned casually or not at all.
Fact is also that it does not matter how you want to define success, the ingredients are always the same: tears, blood and sweat! That was so, it is so and it will always remain so. No one is so successful in the lap!
However, everyone has to answer the question, what price he is willing to pay, whether he wants to sacrifice himself for success and risk his own health.
Performance must be worthwhile again
It was only when I was studying that I realized that it could be quite fulfilling to be fully committed to one thing and to kneel properly. These were four exhausting but wonderful years.
During this time I experienced for the first time my own body, which contains much more in me than I thought. This realization was accompanied by a nice side effect. I developed a completely new way of working, which is characterized by speed, precision and result orientation. During this time, I worked intensively on working techniques and learned the speed reading.
Then came the entry into the world of work and I approached with the same eagerness highly motivated to the tasks. But the shot went backwards. It did not matter if I was fast or not; it had no effect on my working hours or my salary. That did not fit to my claim!
What I really could not do was needed! I was totally unhappy! But I did not want to just accept it - and above all, I did not want to adapt to the given system. This was one of the reasons why I made myself independent.
