Mobile payment - other countries are already on
Recently, during my research for an MBA course eCommerce, I had worked with mobile payment systems. In addition, I came across the mobile payment method mPesa for my research in Kenya.
In Germany, however, it is traditionally difficult to deal with the issue of mobile payment. Too large are the security concerns, in addition the EC-card has already long established itself. Now, the savings banks now provide their customers as the first bank group in Germany cashless payments also by mobile phone.
A pilot project to be expanded
The whole has been tested so far in the Hanover and the cities of Hildesheim, Braunschweig and Wolfsburg and at selected dealers such as the Esso petrol stations, the bookseller Thalia, the sweets chain Hussel and the textile houses of Appelrath-Cüpper.
Since August 2012, all 45 million savings banks have been exchanged for new cards with the girogo function. 1,3 Million SparkassenCards with girogo have already been issued. 2013, the system is also to be used nationwide at all dealers.
Pay by mobile - that's how it works
The payment is made with the card, which the customer can charge with up to 200 Euro. The customer holds his SparkassenCard with girogo to the dealer's NFC-enabled (NFC = Near Field Communication) smartphone, on which the App Kasse2go is installed, and the previously entered amount is debited.
The free app makes a conventional NFC-enabled smartphone to the mobile payment terminal and is intended to lure all those traders who have a mobile paying station too expensive. The joy has however its limit: The mobile payment is only possible up to 20 Euro.
Only for NFC-enabled Android devices
The app was developed by the German Sparkassenverlag (DSV) and the IT center of the Sparkassenorganisation (SIZ) for NFC-enabled Android devices. B + S Card Service (B + S), a DSV subsidiary, is responsible for the operation.
As great as it sounds with the "simple mobile payment for all": traders who own, for example, an iPhone or a non-NFC-enabled mobile phone, look into the tube. That is still the majority at the moment. So for many people it's time to say: Technically upgrade and invest.
This is especially true for such Companythat have to deliver their distributors completely with the new equipment - these are also costs that many should shy away from.
Anyone who takes a look at Wikipedia will find that the technical implication on the dealership is actually more complicated than the downloading of an app believe.
For example, the software has to be adapted to any future mobile device model and operating system that comes on the market. Each of these adjustments must be certified by the supporting banks or an institution for the combination of mobile device, customization and bank.
What about data security?
According to the operators, the process is completely secure: for example, the transaction should be guaranteed, that is, the merchant has the certainty that the amount will be credited to his account. And Thomas Krebs, Managing Director at SIZ explains: "The process by which the information is exchanged during the payment process meets the highest security standards. Merchants using Kasse2go are registered, and payments made via smartphones can only be handled with special certified security modules. This provides effective protection against access by third parties. "
As exciting as it sounds, there are also other criticisms of the technology. For example, that the payment is not everywhere, but again only in stores, which is equipped with the appropriate interface (= NFC-enabled Android phone with app), is possible. This increasing diversification of different payment options will make mobile payment not easier, but for the first time more complex.
That one does not have to pay at the cash desk, but the dealers and cashiers need to use only a second device, which makes the payment process slowed instead of faster.
An uncertainty factor is also that you have to recharge the amounts until 200 Euro: If the card is lost then the money is also gone. And honestly, when is it enough to pay 20 euros? I personally do not even manage when I go shopping.
Finally, with the cash also the anonymity falls: In the future traders as well as banks can then wonderfully, where we have purchased everywhere.
The NFC payment is also being compared with the introduction of the 1996 money card, a system which is hardly ever used yet. Many other criticisms are about http://www.heise.de/newsticker/foren/S-Sparkassen-fuehren-NFC-Payment-ein/forum-218919/list/
