Stand-alone or as a focus?
The first question that arises when you are interested in studying is the study variant. There are two ways to study marketing. On the one hand, marketing is offered as a focus in almost every business studies, on the other hand, independent courses of study have emerged in the last few years (but especially at private universities).
The advantage of choosing a degree in business administration is that you can usually choose a further focus and thus position yourself in an interdisciplinary, "broader" way. At the same time, however, this also means that graduates of an independent marketing course of course have more knowledge in the field of marketing, since their entire course was aimed at this area.
Everyone interested in the study should decide which one to choose, by looking at the universities in question personally, and by providing counseling. There is no general recommendation.
Marketing today is much more than just advertising to sell its products and services to men or women. Rather, marketing has also developed into a “concept of holistic, market-oriented corporate management to satisfy the needs and expectations of customers and other interest groups” (Wikipedia). Company align their decisions based on marketing-specific core issues in order to continue to grow and face new challenges.
As a result, students are taught not only content in advertising and communication, but also economic knowledge. The study content includes:
- Business management
- Accounting / Financial Accounting
- Human resources
- Market research
- New Media and E-Commerce
- Advertising and market psychology
- Sales and promotion
- Strategic management
- dialogue marketing
The course content varies, of course, from university to college, depending on the focus. In principle, however, you will encounter these subjects during your studies.
Prospects after graduation
For graduates of marketing studies, there is a wide selection of possible occupational fields. Graduates of the university, where I worked as a student advisor, work for example at an event and marketing agency in Shanghai, in the marketing of Pro7Sat1, at Google, at social communities or are self-employed. In general, for example, career prospects open up ...
- in the strategic or product management of companies
- in market research
- in the sales service / sales overseas service
- in key account management at advertising and marketing agencies
- in Customer Relationship Management
- in business consultancy
It depends mainly on how the respective student has already set his priorities during his studies and in which areas he gained practical experience, eg with the help of student jobs.
