Thus Helga Theunert and Kathrin Demmler describe the situation in which little children grow up today. Sounds harmless, but it is not, as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes:

Child-friendly distraction?

Overview

According to a survey, 90 percent of American parents are already trying to keep children under the age of two happy by using electronic media. As a result, the AAP has tightened earlier warnings and released recommendations to 2011 on how parents should handle electronic media so that children under the age of two are not harmed.

The AAP has organized 60.000 American Pediatricians and Surgeons. In short, the medical organization writes: "The AAP advises that children under two years use electronic media."

Media Decrease Talking Time

Overview

Doctors rely on 50 studies, which have since 1999 examined how television and video work to under two-year-olds. How does the AAP come to its recommendations? Let's just look at the everyday life of parents sitting in front of the TV and having their children play in the same room. The first effect is obvious:

"Toddlers will hardly follow a television program if they do not understand it. But the parents are busy. The television may only be a background medium for the child, but it is in the foreground for the parents. The TV distracts the parents - and reduces the interaction between parent and child. The growth of his vocabulary, however, depends directly on the> talk time <with the parents or on the time that father or mother talk to him. Watching a lot of television in a household can have a negative effect on the child's speech, simply because parents are likely to talk too little to their child. "

The effect of Backround Media

Overview

That sounds immediately comprehensible, but a lot of parents are really new, like Backround Media directly on toddlers. The AAP points to an experiment conducted by Marie Evans Schmidt with her colleagues:

50 Children aged 12, 24 and 36 months played with different toys for exactly one hour. 30 minutes ran in the same room a game show on the television, the other half hour the TV remained switched off. The effect: Backround media not only significantly reduce the playing time of the toddlers, but also the attention with which they devote themselves to the game. The television interrupted the children's play, even if they had not clearly directed their attention to the unit.

To chances and risks, ask the brain

Schmidt and colleagues write: "These results point to later influences that are noticeable in cognitive development."
