A recent survey shows that almost every third employee in Germany goes to work for fear, even in the case of illness. On the other hand, one in every tenth is to use the cold season, simply to make times blue.

Who was interviewed?

According to a recent survey by the Glassdoor job and career platform, more than 70% of the German respondents surveyed did not attend work at least one day due to illness. One in four (25,3%) even longer than seven days.

The study was conducted by the market research institute Harris Interactive on behalf of Glassdoor. In Germany, the 14. and 18. December 2015 surveyed a total of 1.030 participants between the ages of 16 and 64 years. The same representative survey also took place in Great Britain (1.033 participants), France (1.025 participants) and the Netherlands (1.050 participants).

Germany and the international comparison

In international comparison, the figures are much lower: in the UK (51,8%), the Netherlands (48,2%) and France (41,7%), only about one in two 2015 employees have been reported to be ill ,

However, in Germany, more than one in ten (10,1%) were also willing to take advantage of the cold season in order to bounce a day in the coming month. The rate is up to 3,5% higher than in the other countries under investigation. In gender comparison, it is noticeable that the proportion of simulating men (13,9%) is more than double that of women (5,8%). The gap is lower in other countries.

Men more willing to "celebrate sick"

One result, however, shows itself across borders: on average, men are apparently the more daring simulants. Because the “Blaumacher” largely agree on the motives: In Germany 60,7% state that they simply want to take a break, while 38,7% justify celebrating sick that they have worked hard and therefore deserve it. Interesting: 10,7% admit that they want to use the "unexpected" day off for shopping - 18,2% for visiting friends or family.

In the comparison of the generations, the younger age groups are more susceptible: about every seventh under 24 years (15,7%) plans to blaze once in the cold season despite good physical condition. However, with increasing age, this tendency decreases - with the over 55-age the sickness is a rare exception. In this age group, not even every twentieth (4,7%) would be exposed to one day if health does not force him to do so.

Every second person finds that colleagues return to the office too soon after illness

If employees are really sick, they should not feel guilty or do not have to worry about office rattling, they should rather go home and reduce their risk of infection. The phenomenon of presentism, which is to be seen in spite of illness in the workplace, is nevertheless very pronounced on the German labor market.

Almost half of the respondents (49,8%) said their colleagues are coming back to the office too early. Almost every third employee in Germany (28,4%) does not stay at home for fear of the job and appears to be in the workplace despite illness.

With a cold even less than every second person stays away from work. As the results of the representative survey show, 60,6% of Germans do not even give themselves a day's rest from coughing, runny nose and hoarseness. One in five (19,9%) states that they feel pressured by superiors not to log out of illness.

Colleagues under suspicion

On the other hand, almost every third German (30,1%) also believes that colleagues submit more sick days than is actually necessary. Is the mistrust in the office in the often quoted “envious republic” Germany particularly high?

Not necessarily: the French are a little less skeptical about this question (32,8%) and the British (29,8%). In the Netherlands, on the other hand, only 16,9% find that their colleagues are able to relax for an unnecessarily long time.
