Job search Application and authenticity: Be yourself and find the dream job!

Authenticity is important when looking for a job and Casting extremely important - on both sides. Those who pretend will not find their dream job or dream employee.

The desire to show your best side as an applicant

When applying for a position or something similar, you may want to show yourself at your best. So when you apply for a job, you are inclined to indicate your best skills and abilities.

Because especially in a very difficult and highly competitive corporate environment, it is extremely important to make a good impression. In the business world, the impression you make of your co-workers, colleagues from other companies, or the public is critical to improving your chances of success. And the impression that people around us, as well as potential bosses and colleagues, play a crucial role in the success that we have in the job.

Just be authentic when applying?

So how nice it would be if we could simply make a good impression of ourselves with our own distinctive personality. Because everyone has special strengths that can also be valuable for employers. And we should confidently convince other people of this. Incidentally, that does not mean that you have to show all facets of a personality, what is required is much more professional authenticity.

Unfortunately, the reality is different: Anyone who reads the catalogs of requirements that HR managers write in most job advertisements is quickly inclined to spruce up their own image when applying. That can be a serious mistake. It is better to be yourself, as the following real examples show. Many don't do that: bending over to catch every straw, bending over to catch every straw, is much more common than you think.

Keep each door open

There's this story, for example: An applicant just sent an application that was too nice, one that automatically made HR think “WOW, that's exactly what I was looking for”. Unfortunately, in the interview, the applicant does not keep what his application promises, he is, contrary to what his image suggests, quiet and reserved. He had the application created by a copywriter and a designer. Result: 15 interviews without an offer. What do we learn from this for application practice? Please do not outsource applications!

ME is an extreme example of how some applicants think they have to bend over. Very few will hire ghostwriters and designers. Instead, it's often much more subtle: I've just come across a case like this where someone grabs every straw while looking for a job. Turning sometimes in this direction, sometimes in that direction, not knowing exactly which direction you want to take.

If you are wrong, you will not find a dream job!

Of course, you don't want to spoil your contact with anyone, keep all doors open. However, such an applicant does not have a clear opinion and does not have a fixed position on many things. In this way, potential employers do not even know how to classify the slightly indecisive candidate and what he stands for. Not to mention the fact that the candidate doesn't even know what goal he wants and should get involved with.

A big shortcoming in a job market, where you have to score less and less with average and more and more with excellent performance - and the latter are especially possible if the job suits you. In other words: if you pretend, you will definitely not find your dream job, i.e. the job that really suits you. Those who remain honest and authentic may fall through quite a few grids at the beginning. In the long term, however, he is more likely to find something that really suits him.

More courage to please yourself!

Therefore: Be authentic in your application. Only by being real, being honest, being who you are will you find the job that suits you. To be authentic or real means to have integrity. That creates trust. Therefore, your application should simply show the real you.

I just think about it Regine Heidorn, who told me in an interview that her customers appreciate exactly this honesty about her: Because they always know where they stand. And because that's how trust is created. Because every employment relationship is also a relationship of trust. Those who pretend to be undermined this trust. With this in mind: more courage to yourself please! Incidentally, this also applies to companies: Those who do not show themselves openly may find employees in the short term, but fail to keep them in the long term - and that is ultimately what matters.

  1. Beatrice says:

Authenticity sounds so great, be yourself, find the dream job ... such tips are completely bullshit, it just depends on the employees and the company being a good match. The human component has to be right.

    • Simone Janson says:

I totally agree with you, something other than that the matching has to be right, but I didn't say anything at all.
