The good news
The good news: There are ways to change that! With memory techniques you achieve great success after a little practice. A great promise? Certainly! But absolutely realistic.
First, you can say: you are not alone! Many of them feel that they are not satisfied with their memory, forget facts, find it difficult to remember names, or even cling to notes during a short lecture.
The end of the millennium, scientifically confirmed, and still very rare, allow various methods to significantly improve our memory in certain areas and to profit from it both in everyday life and in work.
The secret of success
The success recipe can be summarized in three words:
Thinking in pictures!
This is the foundation of the memory techniques. When learning contents are transformed into mental images, additional brain areas are activated, which are responsible for visual imagination, creativity, fantasy and spatial navigation. And thereby included in the learning processes.
Fantasy can be practiced!
But do you see “nothing” when you close your eyes? Having trouble imagining things that are not real? Do not try to see anything desperately, especially not a "still picture". Think of movements that belong to the situation, as well as noises, smells, tastes and emotions that an image triggers in you.
Please do not be frustrated, if you still have the impression that you can imagine little. The imaginative ability can be trained, you just have to overcome it! And to think of a picture, even if you do not see it, is the first step.
When pictures become information
And how are abstract information now converted into images? It is important that the pictures do not have to be exactly for the content. They only serve as an impulse to remember. Please visualize the following situation as well as possible.
In front of you is a huge pile of hay. Since you can not see it anymore, you can fill a gap. Then a shark jumps through and bites a man standing behind it. This one averted with pain.
There is a big box. On this stands a sack of wheat. A duke comes by and orders in a harsh tone that the owner has to hand a part as a tax. He gives him coal as compensation. Suddenly a wolf comes and scares both.
This is how you train your memory
Go through this "story" in your mind's eye two or three times. Concentrate on the terms printed in bold. Then it will be easy to tell the story and above the highlighted terms.
Play the story again and pay attention to the names:
Heuss Lübke Heinemann Scheel Carstens Von Weizsäcker Duke Rau Köhler Wulff
Congratulations! They were unconsciously impressed by the ten German Presidents in chronological order. And you can not think of it in pictures, can you?
How do you remember difficult names?
To think of Sandra at Sand or at Ross on a horse is still easy. But how is that with difficult names like Mr. Kaczmarczyk or Mrs. Nguyen? What kind of pictures are there for such names? After all, pictures should make sure that we can remember the names.
It is important that you realize that the pictures are only an impulse so that you can remember the name. We must first have understood the name consciously. The best way to do this is to speak it out yourself: “Hello Mr. Kaczmarczyk, nice to meet you.”
Understand the name first
This will ensure that you have recorded the name. And is useful for two reasons:
- They still know the name after the first conversation and can then take the necessary steps undertaketo memorize him permanently.
- Your brain picks up the correct name. Associated with an image, this image is enough to remind you of the name, even if the similarity is low.
So your memory is better than you think! My tip: First, think about what name you have in front of you. So there are a lot more Müllers and Webers than Kaczmarcyks. My tip: divide the names into one of the following categories:
Names through occupations
The first category are names that designate professions. Huber, Schmidt, Baker, King, Maier ... Especially the most frequent surnames belong to this. What is the picture? The activity! You can imagine what a miller does or a baker. This is, of course, your picture for the name.
Second, there are also many specific names. Stone, black, big. Here the picture is also immediately clear. The stone. Something black. An over the top person. Sound-like names
More interesting are already names, which only contain something concrete. Seiffert, Biermann, and Dorniek. But as already learned, an impulse is enough! With the image soap, you will therefore automatically get the correct name Seiffert.
Heavy and foreign names
And if all of this doesn't fit? Then it is often a matter of foreign names. Did you know that Kowalski is derived from the Polish word for blacksmith, roughly corresponding to the German “Schmidt”? Probably not.
So we have to find the pictures differently. Here is the trick: choose several pictures! They add to a small picture story. Co-Wal-ski. Imagine Mr. Kowalski walking KO because he was crossed by a whale on skis. Pretty crazy? Sure, of course! But just for this reason absolutely worthy.
Special case: I already know whom…. Even people you already know are “pictures”. No matter whether celebrities or from your circle of friends. Get to know Mr. Luther, think of Martin Luther. An image for the name would also be the presentation of his theses. This way also works well with last names, which are also used as first names.
If all this is difficult at first, it is normal. Overcome yourself and try. Go through your address book. You already know the people, but what pictures do they have for the names?
And what do you think of the above names?
My idea: Mr. Kaczmarczyk. Pictures: “Katz” e and “Marzi” pan Ms. Nguyen. Image: wish you a “good” appetite
