[Bio] Historians astray:

I come from a family where technology and craftsmanship are very important. After graduation, I decided to turn my back on this centuries-old tradition and studied history, philosophy and politics.

Analytical Obsessions

Overview

Afterwards, however, it turned out that this was only a seeming break, because I only landed some time after the studies in the database programming (to the great joy of my father, who had already given up all hope).

Amazingly enough, thanks to analytical obsessions that I have used to understand my interpersonal relationships to date, I have been able to achieve this very well.

Contact with IT never completely lost

Overview

Of course, this was also due to the fact that I had never completely lost contact with IT: My father started as a programmer (then still at "Zuse") at Thyssen in Duisburg in the mid-sixties. Since he saw a groundbreaking technology in IT that will continue to provide jobs in the coming decades, he steered me early in this direction.

1982 / 1983 I learned my first programming language with Basic on a Commodore at school, but I decided to study for a spiritual science after the Abitur and the subsequent military service. The IT, however, I stayed in my free time and various computer generations (Atari, 386, 486) switched to my desk. Of course, I had an Internet connection very early and I was interested in the emerging web technologies.

First a freelance journalist

Overview

After my studies in human sciences, I worked in various fields as a freelance journalist. The highlight was my time as an editor for local-specific themes at the then channel 10.

At the time, I made a series of essays on history and archeology on the Rhine and Moselle with a well-known archaeologist. In total, we produced nine contributions that enjoyed a great response from the audience.

Entry into the IT

Overview

Unfortunately, the financial aspect was not sufficient enough, so I decided to use my IT-potential, which I had acquired during my free time, and to use it professionally in this part of my life.

I was also able to enter the company in the second half of the year 1998 at a newly founded software company, which carried out a major insurance project.

"Deal with IT and business!"

Overview

I can only advise every humanities student to seize every opportunity to engage with other areas (IT, business, ect.). The professional environment for humanities scholars was not exactly rosy at the end of my studies, but times seem to have become even harder since then.

So: do not lose heart, trust yourself, be persistent and be prepared for the fact that it sometimes takes a few years for success to set in!

    Hello Chrischii,
well, so against the taxpayer Germanist I have just refused here:.
Like woman Professor Meyer-Althoff said so nicely, in the picture are also strong the Professorblame, who do not point out any other alternatives or even look beyond the horizon.
My small collection should also show that humanities scholars can do more than they think - if they show some initiative.
But if you like: I'm looking forward to more reviews for my collection!

  2. Chrischii

This is true with the humanists. It is not for nothing that there is the permanent image of the Germanist who is a taxi driver after graduation. Unfortunately, the prospects are not so rosy, a large part of the way to self-employment, usually as a freelancer or sole proprietorship. Dependent occupations are rather rare. Therefore, I can only encourage everyone to acquire more knowledge, especially in the technical field !!
