How is the promotion of continuing vocational training regulated by law?

Although the division into retraining, further education and vocational adjustment already 1997 was officially repealed with the transition to the third Social Code, it exists in many places in the internal linguistic usage of the Federal Employment Agency even further - the employment consultants of that time have not yet become accustomed to the new terminology everywhere.

You can also find the names often in official brochures of the Arbeitsagentur. Finally, the division is useful in order to illustrate the promotion of further training by the Agency for Employment, various support possibilities, which coincide with the promotion of continuing vocational training.

There are three departments at the Employment Agency:

  • In a retraining you learn a new profession, so it is a kind of second education. Retraining is encouraged if you are no longer able to work in your chosen profession (eg for health reasons or because there is no job at your place of residence, but you can not move away for family reasons) and if you clearly after retraining have more chances to find a job. If you are a roofer and the doctor certifies that you can not work because of back problems, you have a good chance. These will be improved if you have previous knowledge on which retraining can build on - then retraining will be shorter and cheaper. For example, with a druggist who wants to retrain to the chemical lab technician, because then he can work in a particular chemical company.
  • Continuing education makes sense for you if you can not find a job with your previous education and therefore based on your current abilities further education need or want (as opposed to retraining, which represents a complete reorientation). This includes the businessman who wants to do his business administration as well as the journeyman who wants to take his master's examination. But also the unskilled laborer who wants to make up for it can apply for further training.
  • If, on the other hand, you have not worked for several years, perhaps because you have taken care of the family, you are called a career returner and can get a career adjustment that will bring your skills and knowledge up to date - and finally a lot changed! For example, the accountant who spent 15 years nurturing children now has to learn how to use the latest software while continuing to use her expertise. Even if the employment agency continues to talk separately about job adjustment, there is no special support from target groups such as female returnees anymore. These are taken into account in the context of "labor market necessity", ie if, like everyone else, you have a concrete opportunity to re-enter and need further training.

Duration

Overview

The duration of such courses varies widely, from one week to two years. It depends on what should be taught. Since every participant has other prior knowledge, on which the further education should build, many educational institutions no longer work with a complete course, but with "modules", in which one can get in and out depending on previous knowledge. So you can choose exactly those parts of the training that will help you close your gaps. As a result, the measures are also cheaper.

You can receive further education grants if you are entitled or in receipt of unemployment benefits, ie have worked for at least 12 months in the last two years or if you receive unemployment benefit II.
