OPINION! Entrepreneur Gabriele Paglialonga: South Tyrol as a business location - top or flop?

South Tyrol is often associated with holidays, but the region also has a lot to offer economically, such as the lowest unemployment rate within the EU and the highest gross domestic product in Italy. How good is the location for Startups? The entrepreneur Gabriele Paglialonga compares South Tyrol with innovation centers in the USA.

From the USA to South Tyrol

Gabriele Paglialonga has lived in the USA for a long time and also spent time there in Boston Company Medygo was founded before he decided to return to his home in South Tyrol. Paglialonga is also the coordinator for Italian business Network Italiacamp and also supports other startup founders. For him, South Tyrol has both advantages and disadvantages - especially for young company founders.

He sees an advantage in the high quality of life, which is also due to the autonomy of the South Tyrol-Trentino region guaranteed in the Italian constitution, among other things in education and business.

The advantages of South Tyrol

South Tyrol has an unemployment rate of 5,3 percent and a nominal gross domestic product of 18.664 billion. The share of corporate investment in GDP was 2011 26,7 percent. The IRES tax rate is 27,5 per cent. The IRAP tax rate is the lowest in Italy with 2,98 per cent, whereas in the first five years this tax is even completely lost for newly founded companies. The employment rate is 71 percent, 28 percent of them are self-employed.

This starts at the university, where company founders are faced with real problems. In the framework of a university project, Elisabetta Seggioci, 19, and Andriy Tyyko, 20, first-year computer science students, looked for innovations to address the problems of local farmers in production to solve. They had met with these and found that hail was the greatest risk of crop failure. Although there were already hail nets, they had to be manually opened, if it hailed - which led to time delays and thus damage.

Innovative university spin-offs

The students therefore developed a hail reporting system whose sensors open the hail nets automatically and promptly. They have applied for a patent for it and sell now licenses to companies that manufacture hail nets.

Despite so much creativity, South Tyrol is not a start-up paradise for Paglialonga. This depends on the fact that the basic condition for a successful StartUp is creative, entrepreneurial thinking. This requires not only an appropriate training, but also the environment must be correspondingly inspiring and open to new ideas. For this reason, Paglialonga has founded its own company in Boston. For StartUp founders who would come to South Tyrol, on the other hand, it would be much more difficult to get on the spot with the traditionally colored mentality on the ground than in other places.
