Career thanks to EQ?
A term haunts the press: "Emotional Intelligence", supposedly one of the key competencies. Key competences are the interdisciplinary qualifications that are not measurable.
The intelligence quotient, for example, can be fixed on a scale, but emotional intelligence can only be felt or felt. For the career, this means: because of your IQ you will be hired - because of your EQ you will be promoted.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
EQ means looking beyond the cultural box. An example of EQ is cultural sensitivity. You can be very good at the subject; But if you work with a Chinese, that does not help you much. Above all, you should be able to look beyond your cultural nose and empathize with your counterpart.
Otherwise, you will not succeed - and you will be finally measured. However, cultural sensitivity already helps in its own country. The North German, who does not understand Bavaria, or vice versa, will always be behind his abilities.
Is expertise crucial?
It is often argued: "But the expertise is crucial." Expertise is important to the job, but you can not go far with expertise alone.
Many technically excellent specialists fail when it comes to dealing with other people. If you are more concerned with people than machines, then you need to be able to interact with each person individually.
5 Tips: Make a career with EQ
Meanwhile, when hiring a new employee more attention is paid to how someone in the Teams behaves. But the job descriptions are for the most part technical descriptions, and in case of doubt, the certificate grade is the decisive factor.
1. Assessment Center and Emotional Intelligence
An attempt to test the behavior of a new person in reality are assessment centers, in which, however, often small, amateur actors compete against each other, who have previously read how they behave best.
Questions are much more meaningful, with which the stress resistance of an applicant is tested. Unfortunately, personnel often have to check so many applicants that they have too little time for the individual, or they are too badly trained for the job.
2. Can listen
What soft skills are the most important? The first thing to do is an ability that few have, namely, to be able to listen to.
Whoever only demonstrates the other's own knowledge or opinion, receives little feedback or information. In times when mergers are more common in the economy, it is important to sell yourself and your ideas well, otherwise you will be fast on changes. Finally, one should also be able to delegate, which in turn requires trust and communication skills, all key competences.
3. Do women have more EQ?
It is often claimed that women naturally have greater emotional intelligence. It must be said that men and women have different skills. In fact, women often have greater empathy - and are better able to listen. For this they often have more inhibitions to present themselves.
When a man is given a job that is new to him, he says more, "Of course I can do it!". A woman, on the other hand, tends to say, "I'll try it," even if she's done the same job three times. So men and women should train different skills. Put simply, men need to learn to shut up, women need to learn to open the door.
4. Learning Emotional Intelligence?
Is it possible to apply soft skills at all? Yes, because unlike the measurable intelligence, the emotional is largely learnable. Some people do more easily than others. However, many key competences are based on experience and practice. There can stimulate a book to reflect, as a first step.
At a seminar, role plays can be used to practice specific situations. A good coach manages to address the gut feeling of the participants. That can be painful, but this keeps the learned "longer lasting".
5. EQ through coaching?
Another option is coaching. The coach gives you a mirror; It alerts you to behaviors that you have not yet consciously perceived. However, you have to get involved, otherwise the best coach will not help. At the beginning there is always the confrontation with oneself - without completely questioning oneself.
A good training field is, by the way, active in early youth in the youth work, in associations, in the sports club. Constant practice in everyday life is much more than a seminar, which lasts for a maximum of a few days. You will then understand your fellow human beings better, you will be able to cope with your partner - and finally with yourself.
