One term haunted the press: “Emotional intelligence”, supposedly one of the most important key competences. The key competencies are the general qualifications, which cannot be measured.
The intelligence quotient, for example, can be fixed on a scale, but emotional intelligence can only be felt or felt. For the career, this means: because of your IQ you will be hired - because of your EQ you will be promoted.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
EQ means looking beyond the cultural box. An example of EQ is cultural sensitivity. You can be very good at the subject; But if you work with a Chinese, that does not help you much. Above all, you should be able to look beyond your cultural nose and empathize with your counterpart.
Otherwise, you will not succeed - and you will be finally measured. However, cultural sensitivity already helps in its own country. The North German, who does not understand Bavaria, or vice versa, will always be behind his abilities.

It is often claimed that women naturally have greater emotional intelligence. It must be said that men and women have different skills. In fact, women often have greater empathy - and are better able to listen. For this they often have more inhibitions to present themselves.
When a man is given a task that is new to him, he is more likely to say: "Sure I can do it!". A woman, on the other hand, is more likely to say, "I'll try", even if she has successfully completed the same task three times. So men and women should train different skills. To put it bluntly: Men have to learn to shut up, women have to learn to open up.
4. Learning Emotional Intelligence?
Is it possible to apply soft skills at all? Yes, because unlike the measurable intelligence, the emotional is largely learnable. Some people do more easily than others. However, many key competences are based on experience and practice. There can stimulate a book to reflect, as a first step.
At a seminar, specific situations can be practiced in role-playing games. A good trainer manages to address the gut feeling of the participants. This can be painful at times, but this means that what you have learned remains “longer lasting”.
5. EQ through coaching?

However, you have to get involved, otherwise the best coach is of no use. At the beginning there is always a discussion about yourself - without completely questioning yourself.

Constant practice in everyday life is much more than a seminar, which lasts for a maximum of a few days.
