The four most important tasks of corporate management should be based on ethical principles.
Task 1: Target definition
The first task of corporate governance based on ethical principles is the definition of long, medium and short term goals. By that I do not just mean profit and profit targets:
The first question is the question of meaning, from which the vision, the strategy, the entrepreneurial principles, the concrete entrepreneurial objectives and the area and department objectives can be derived.
Task 2: Economic Leadership
The second task of the company management is to realize the defined goals with the least material effort, to spare resources and to constantly optimize the processes by creative work.
This means understanding and exploiting mistakes as learning opportunities. The guideline of action is always the goal, and thus the success, from which profits later arise. These gains are the result of ethical action, but not the goal itself.
Task 3: Selection, leadership and motivation of the employees
An oriental proverb says: “He who works alone adds. Who works together multiplies. " The right leadership is crucial in realizing ambitious goals. To do this, it is necessary that you choose your employees carefully. The best conceivable woman or man imaginable should be found for every position and every job. Frederick the Great once said: "If we succeed in having the best man imaginable in every place, we will be the most powerful state in Europe."
Leadership is the area in corporate management that will become even more important in the future. John D. Rockefeller said, "I pay more for the gift of treating people rightly than for any other skill under the sun." Treating employees as they are contributes to their deterioration. Anyone who treats people as they could be promotes their improvement, according to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This does not mean that a weak personality becomes a suitable employee, but it is still useful for motivating people and ethically correct if we treat them as they could be. That is why you should measure the performance of an employee not only by whether their area of responsibility works smoothly, but also by whether they are developing personally.
Task 4: Controlling in the operational and strategic area
Control is a necessary prerequisite to guarantee discipline and the fulfillment of goals and plans. It is not about monitoring, but about identifying deviations from the ideal state and analyzing the causes and combating them. In the sense of permanent optimization, deviations are transformed into potential successes in a fair way.
Whenever problems, obstacles or mistakes entail sanctions, everyone will be in the Company Do everything possible to hide it. This will undermine the systematic optimization of a company's performance. And that would certainly be unethical - and economically nonsensical. Therefore you should avoid sanctions and give help for self-help and offer support.
Conclusion: moral attitude and ethical rules as the cornerstone
From my point of view, two things are crucial when someone's goal is to act ethically in his area of responsibility:
First, personal attitudes, and therefore the individual ethical-moral attitude of the honest and truthful man. Secondly, an ethical set of rules with binding ethical and implementable behavioral standards, which is closely related to 1.
