eMails - the end of concentration?
According to American psychologist Edward Hallowell, people who constantly read and answer new mails lose the ability to work on projects on a permanent basis.
A study by the University of London from the year 2005 found that our intelligence quotient decreases on average by ten points, if we call through a ringing phone or incoming eMails are distracted (this is more than twice as much as the reduction by four points, which causes the smoking of a joint).
Focus more than 30 seconds?
Niall Fergusson, economist at Harvard University, explained after a speech by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt in Berlin in the year 2011 that he now almost obsessively answers about 200 Mails a day, his younger son not from the Playstation to solve , the daughter was Facebook-dependent and the older son of his girlfriend sent SMS in two minutes.
He wonders if we'll still be able to concentrate on one thing longer than 30 seconds in the future.
3 extreme cases of eMail-Stress
I have particularly remembered three extreme cases that I encountered in the course of my work:
- A manager told me once that he must press 200 times the day on the send and receive button of his mail program, in order to see if there is something new.
- One of my premium clients learned after a workshop in a confidential conversation from a senior employee that in their inbox more than 1.500 were mails, with their answer they were in arrears. Scary.
- The participant of an in-house seminar already told me 2005 that he deliberately produces a crash every six months due to the accumulated, unprocessed mails, in order to call the system administrator and the eMailClient. Sounds pretty desperate. Do you know what your company looks like?
