Review: What influence did the quarantine and corona have on the individual professions?

The so-called structure-preserving system-relevant professions such as auxiliary services (fire brigade, postal companies, transport companies, hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, rescue services, police) and, for example, trading in basic goods were of course secured and kept the “operation” going.

The direct service providers such as hairdressers and restaurants initially had a hard time because they remained closed. Those who worked in primary care had more to do than they did before Corona. At the beginning, the hamster purchases were not entirely uninvolved. A real boom in online retail broke out when the stores that went beyond basic services, such as shoe and clothing stores, were still closed. The post even had to hire additional staff.

Skill shortages in medicine, tourism industry on the ground

The medical sector had to struggle hard with the shortage of skilled workers and the measures. The care area for older people was particularly badly affected. Ultimately, however, only neighborhood help, online platforms, forums and the homepages of the municipalities helped. This worked very well, especially in Germany. Many people got involved because they were forced to do nothing to help others. They performed, often on a voluntary basis, driving and messenger services, shopping as well as child and elderly care services.

The aviation industry and the tourism industry have been worst hit. Some airlines barely missed the closure. Nevertheless, thousands of people were dismissed. There are some government support programs, with the Federal Employment Agency and Job Center helping. Since the aviation industry will not recover so quickly, it is advisable for employees in this industry to look for new applications themselves. In addition to professional reorientation, many people also have the crisis to recharge their batteries used for the new challenge.

Short-time work or unemployment

What happened to the apprentices and what is the situation now? Depending on the industry, the apprentices were sent on short-time work or entirely at home. All contracts remained. In the meantime, companies have had to dismiss employees, but still accept apprentices. Sounds paradoxical, doesn't it? This is due to the fact that an apprentice costs less than a long-term employee. Sounds very, very hard, but it is true. Company have to calculate. Family businesses can hardly afford apprentices in this situation.

The majority of apprentices are sought in industry and wholesale. However, it must be said that industrial apprentices are tomorrow's so urgently needed specialists. But young people have also seen that not everything is always “funny” and that they have to work harder to get ahead. The most important thing for young people is to be clear about what they are really good at and what suits them. Someone with two “left hands” is definitely not a good carpenter. Freezing on the Internet at professional trade fairs, industry websites or the largest companies in the industry is certainly a good opportunity for a future apprentice to get smart.

Were there any people who had a bomb-proof job?

The health professions were certainly the most important at that time. Those who have already worked in the home office also had it easier. But only if it was a service or something that people needed anyway. It will be safe after Corona Give more home office opportunities. In 2000, work from home was put on a better legal footing. Mothers in particular had made use of this opportunity. Many women find it difficult to return to their old jobs after the children are born.

Most of the time this is due to “dear money” or the lack of suitable childcare places. Corona has opened up many opportunities for women who have used them. It always depends on the respective situation and industry. A secure job despite the crisis is always one that can be designed flexibly. In order for something to move and develop, everyone has to roll up their sleeves and do something. This works best if you are looking for something new based on the tried and tested.

How secure is the office?

The question of whether to go to the office sick or not has always been important. Only a lot of people couldn't afford to ask this question, because otherwise the job would have been history. In times of saving at the wrong end, more and more workers were rationalized as soon as they got sick. Of course, people went to the office sick then.

But did that really make sense? Of course not, because then everyone else will be infected. In recent years, at least some companies have rethought. Diseases and infections in the office they also harm the company. Productivity suffers enormously.

“Made in Germany” is back in fashion

"Made in Germany" is on the rise again due to the Corona crisis. The Corona crisis also clearly showed that it was a big mistake to exchange German and foreign specialists who had worked in Germany for decades for cheap workers from abroad.

Almost all professions that also use offices were able to transfer at least part of their work to the home office and were therefore on the safe side. Nevertheless, there is still a lot to change in terms of digitization.
