The 5 Best Business Hotels: Classics for Business Travel & Meetings {Review}

Classic business hotels may seem a bit boring at first glance, but they often have standards and comfort that are sorely lacking in smaller hotels. We visited 5 of them.

1. Modern business comfort with city view: The Hyperion Munich

The Hyperion Hotel Munich, which opened in 2019, is located not far from Prinzregentenplatz in the newly built “Bogenhausener Tor” building complex. The “Bavaria Towers” consist of four towers with a front ground floor and a gently curved facade.

Room and location of the hotel

It's just under four kilometers to the city center, by tram you can get to the main train station in about 30 minutes, the exhibition grounds can be reached by car in less than ten minutes and the hotel has 130 parking spaces, a charging station for e-cars and selected ones Trade fairs, a trade fair shuttle.

The hotel has 341 rooms, which on the upper floors offer a fantastic view of Munich and - when the weather is clear - a view of the Alps. In addition, it offers business-typical comfort such as WiFi and refinements such as underfloor heating and lighting that goes on under the bed when you get up at night, and the room service robot Jess, which independently and automatically delivers drinks and snacks on request.

Restaurants and function rooms

Two restaurants, the Gourmet Friend and the Zirbelstube, provide 250 seats for physical enjoyment, the breakfast has a good selection. There is also a well-equipped fitness area.

The whole thing is complemented by a spacious conference area with around 700 m² and six event rooms with a total of around 440 square meters. All in all, a pleasant, well-equipped hotel that is also very convincing in terms of service.

2. Urban design meets Spanish hospitality: INNSiDE by Meliá in Berlin Mitte

Urban design meets Spanish hospitality - that is the motto of the stylish INNSiDE by Meliá in Berlin Mitte. The location alone is ideal: Directly in Berlin Mitte, 1 km from the main train station and easily accessible by tram, with direct connections to the airport and the public transport network. And only 2 km away are the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz, Checkpoint Charlie, Museum Island and many other popular sights in the city.

Hip design, professional equipment

As soon as you step into the hotel you will find yourself in the openly designed, elegant lobby bar and lounge as well as right next to the Crafterie restaurant. The restaurant as well as the lobby and bar have a trendy, industrial and casual design, which at the same time manages to maintain a cozy and inviting ambience.

This continues in the 400 square meter meeting and event area on the ground floor: The six multifunctional and flexible conference rooms can be combined with one another and are equipped with the latest technology such as light, sound and projection, which is provided by a partner company. Additional services such as a translation service can also be booked on request. There are also 34 parking spaces and a TESLA Destination Charging Station available in the underground car park.

Culinary and relaxation

The rooms are not large, but offer enough space and are equipped with an espresso machine. There is unlimited, free WiFi throughout the hotel. There are also rooms available for disabled guests, which can be requested depending on occupancy.

The restaurant offers modern, German crossover cuisine and values regional products; it draws its inspiration from the combination of atmosphere, design and good cuisine. This can also be felt with the selected but wholesome breakfast, which offers hot and cold dishes, fresh fruit, coffee, various types of tea or, if desired, special egg dishes.

You can relax in the Finnish sauna on the top floor of the hotel with a relaxation area on a small terrace. The hotel also offers a fitness room with modern equipment (cardio machines, weights, stretching). Both can be used 24 hours a day.

3. Business hotel north of the Arctic Circle: The Clairon Hotel The Edge in Tromsø

There are also exciting business hotels where you least expect them: In the far north of the Arctic.

Reindeer races and business location

With 70.000 inhabitants, Tromsø is Norway's largest city and an important business location - but where reindeer races through the city center take place in winter.

The sometimes quite fresh temperatures, even in summer, are also the major shortcoming of the location, which otherwise seems to be made for outdoor events of all kinds.

Major events north of the Arctic Circle

The largest capacity has the 1. May reopened Clairon Hotel The Edge with 290 rooms and space for up to 600 people. The hotel, which runs triangular into the harbor, was designed by architect Niels Torp and by the Danish architects' office Schmidthammer Lassen.

The hotel has eleven meeting rooms, three of which can be combined into one large room for up to 1000 people. They too are more in line with the standard.

4. Exclusive meeting technology: Loden in Vancouver

On the other hand, the loden in the center of Vancouver, not far from the Vancouver Trade & Convention Center with its original grass roof, is particularly exclusive.

Meeting technology perfectly integrated into the design

The quite luxurious hotel has 77 rooms and meeting rooms of various sizes: from the board room for up to 12 people to the 150 m² penthouse with a 130 m² terrace and space for up to 125 visitors.

I find it exciting that the meeting technology has been perfectly integrated into the design: The sound system is hidden behind the paneling and the screen also functions as a Spiegel.

Extras cost extra

A drawback of the hotel, which is not exactly cheap, is that it does not have a pool with a sauna, but only a fitness studio that is open 24 hours a day.

Breakfast also has to be paid for separately. However, the food in the French bistro-restaurant Tableau and the service in the hotel are excellent.

5. Dignified MICE location in a central location: The Waldorf Astoria Berlin

The Waldorf Astoria Berlin is a solid event location in a central location in the western part of the city. If you want to avoid surprises, this is also right for larger events. The atmosphere is different; even the new Romanesque café can not change this impression.

Waldorf Astoria BerlinRooms, meetings, seminars and conferences

The Waldorf Astoria Berlin, which belongs to the Hilton Group, is centrally located in the western part of the city between the Zoological Garden and Kufürstendamm. It has 152 deluxe guest rooms, 59 of them with panoramic views, as well as 80 individually designed suites with views over Berlin.

For meetings, seminars and conferences, a ballroom and five function rooms are available on the second floor of the hotel. Depending on the seating and event the rooms are suitable for between 10 and 350 persons:

The John Jacob Astor ballroom can accommodate up to 350 or in row seating 235 guests. In addition to a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system, he has a professionally equipped stage.

Salons and terrace

In honor of the Waldorf-Astoria New York, smaller venues are designated as salons named after the famous streets and neighborhoods of Manhattan. In addition, salons such as Lexington and Madison Avenue can be combined to accommodate up to 110 guests in row seating.

The event terrace on the sixth floor with views over the city can accommodate up to 200 guests. Anyone who books the terrace for an event automatically gets the ballroom - if the weather changes suddenly. In summer, the terrace is open from 17 clock to open end for external guests and network meetings.

Waldorf AstoriaLibrary and equipment

As a special location, the library in 15. Floor also with beautiful views over Berlin rented. However, there is space for no more than 30 persons. The library thus fulfills the function of an executive lounge normally used for Hilton hotels, which is also open to guests and is open daily from 17 to 22.

Any kind of equipment for office work and events can be rented locally for an additional charge - in the Business Center in the 2. Floor. The equipment takes over conference equipment KFP. These include projector, laptop, sound system and the like. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel at an additional cost.

The business center naturally also has printers and Internet connections for laptops. In addition, it offers six versatile rooms that are suitable for meetings and small conferences.

The hotel has 4 dining options: The main restaurant “Les Solistes by Pierre Gagnaire”, in which the rich Waldorf breakfast and a la carte dinner are served, the Romanisches Café on the ground floor with a terrace facing Kantstrasse, the Lang Bar on the 1st floor. The library on the 15th floor with a fantastic view of City West and the lobby bar in Peacock Alley, right next to the Waldorf Astoria Grandfathers Clock.

I was only able to test the business lunch in Romanian coffee - and was not thrilled. Even if 18 Euro is reasonably priced, the food has to be measured against the expected standards of the hotel: the carrot and ginger soup was a bit too bitter, the bread baked and the potatoes and the vegetables to the Rostbeef steak tasted warmed up , Many Berlin snack stalls offer better food. However, I was quickly assured that various caterers were available for events.

In general, the Romanisches Café is a disappointment: in the 20th century the ultimate meeting place for Berlin artists and intellectuals, then destroyed in the war, it was reopened in 2012 in the Waldorf-Astoria. However, the new café has little in common with the historic cities it refers to, as they were located a few meters away from the Memorial Church. And there is also little resemblance to the furnishing of the original location, it lacks the flair and cosiness that one expects from such a place. No wonder that Criticism was and is violent. Even the half-hearted attempt to draw artists and intellectuals into the restaurant with literary competitions and readings will not change that.
