Buddhism and management - a contradiction in terms?
Buddhism and management: a contradiction or a soothing supplement? Possibility or spinning? Only something for individual combatants and reality-seeking world improvers?
In fact, Buddhism has a lot to offer when it comes to breaking new ground Company to lead according to ethical criteria. And it is also desirable to make a good profit, because only then can all parties benefit.
Prevention of burnout
Meditation and mindfulness, for example, is an excellent prevention against burnout. Indeed, many scientific studies have found that meditation significantly increases the ability to concentrate.
A study by Yi-Yun Tang at the Texas Tech University in Lubbock concluded that daily meditation has a far more positive effect on the brain cells than a pure relaxation exercise: the guiding speed of the gray cells becomes anterior after only four weeks of exercise Cortex increased.
Control emotions through meditation
This means in the clear text that a controlled handling of emotions through meditation is possible. In addition, meditation has a positive effect on the vegetative nervous system: breathing, the pulse, heart and circulation stabilize through regular meditation.
Buddhist organizational development, however, means much more than learning techniques. It means establishing a Buddhist basic attitude towards everything and everyone. Buddhists understand themselves as part of a great whole; it is never the focus of their own gain.
Buddhist entrepreneurs see the big picture
According to a study, this means that Buddhist-oriented entrepreneurs always bear in mind the far-reaching consequences of their actions.
A fact that almost necessarily leads to a fair entrepreneurship with social commitment and sustainability principles. An important role is played by compassion, farsightedness and appreciation.
2 examples and practical tips
I would like to describe in the following two practical examples from our consulting day:
Karsten S. wants to establish a value change in his company. His goal: fairness, motivation and mutual respect as ethical principles for each of his 800 employees as a guiding principle. Karsten, however, does not really know how to put his latest plans into practice, because not everyone in the management likes his style.
The manufacturer of natural supplements Hans B. also relies on unusual and Buddhist management strategies. His employees are not bound by any given timetable, since Hans is completely familiar with them and one thing in particular is important to the company boss: the personal responsibility of each employee. Hans manages his business according to Buddhist principles with all the consequences that result.
How is this done in practice? I will explain this in more detail in the following article, which will be published tomorrow, by means of a so-called Paramitacheck.
2 methods for the right implementation
Above, I have shown practical examples from our consulting routine. In the second part, I would now like to present a little more detail on two methods of how this can succeed.
Method 1: Paramitacheck
An example of a method is the so-called Paramitacheck: In this, classical organizational presentations are combined with Buddhist-ethical manuals (Paramitas).
Organization charts assume that companies are dynamic systems. In these, groups (eg departments) as well as individuals interact in different ways based on personal relationships. If this behavior is disturbed, for example because of a wrong occupation, then it has consequences for the whole enterprise.
When are statements useful?
The advantage of an organizational arrangement is that these relationship dynamics are made visible in the room by means of "actors" (representatives) and therefore can be experienced in three dimensions: thus visible, audible and palpable. This physical experience helps to dissolve old thought patterns and to break new ground.
Organizational appointments are particularly suitable, for example, in the case of company acquisitions, important new appointments or internal restructuring. This has proved particularly successful in the fields of recruitment and employee promotion. In the case of a Paramitacheck, a second set-up level is introduced in addition to the conventional organization set-up namely the Paramitas.
What are the Paramitas?
The Paramitas are six concrete, Buddhist behaviors that help to succeed according to ethical principles. These include classic career virtues such as perseverance and energetic energy, as well as generosity and meaningful action as the ethical basis of every action.
Methods that help broaden the horizon, specifically meditation and wisdom, are also included. Literally, Paramita means "act". So it's about what you have to do to be successful with ethics.
Paramitas and Organizational Constellations
After the Paramitas have been "set up" as their own element on their own, the Paramita- and Organizational Structure will now be linked together in a further step.
This also makes it possible to show very clearly how the Paramitas can be used in the respective company. From the results of this first check, I then put together an individual catalog of measures.
Method 2: Relaxed concentration
This catalog of measures can include individual coachings as well as seminars tailored to the company. Meditation, Asian physical exercises, or leadership abilities are also possible from Buddhism.
The goal of these methods is to create a state of relaxed concentration. This effortless concentration can, with some practice, also be transferred to activities in the workplace.
Come in the flow
An important prerequisite for getting into a state of "flow". This is a condition that can lead to effortless peak performance.
Flow has been discovered by psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi and has been well researched. Flow is considered a state in which "action and consciousness merge" as a form of happiness that one can influence oneself.
