A nice subject: Because social networks such as Xing and LinkedIn offer, rightly used, tremendous opportunities for career planning.

Business Networks: Duty ...

Overview

The task for job seekers is a profound, professional photo and an equally clear, clear profile. It also happens to me over and over again that people in my Xing or LinkedIn profile at a glance over the most important facts informs as in the blog.

While Facebook, Twitter or Instagram are perceived rather as hobby networks, the requirements, such as profile design, photos, but also other occurrences eg in discussion groups, are significantly higher in business networks.

For example, you can write down hobbies and interests here, but personal extravagances are important to most HR rather in the "private" networks. And you can, for example, specify what you are looking for and offer yourself at Xing. In this way, profiles are also easily searchable for specific keywords - a feature that is especially appreciated by HR professionals.

... and freestyle in social media

Overview

But the duty is followed by the courtesy: it is not just a matter of creating a profile and waiting to see what is coming; more important is to engage oneself, eg in discussion groups and topic forums is announced, yes there are even network master tables, on which one can meet its network also live.

Many jobs are created by the fact that people talk about topics and then have ideas for new jobs in the conversation Regine Heidorn- including activities that she herself would never have dreamed of.

Why Xing and LinkedIn bring more than job ads

Overview

Exactly the advantage of networks over the traditional, seemingly comfortable and still always popular job search is via job advertisement. That is because it has its pitfalls, and they too are becoming clear on the example of Regine Heidorn: demands on occupations are changing rapidly today, and traditional occupational titles hardly do justice to them anymore.

Therefore, people do not know how to name the job advertisement and applicants have no idea what they are looking for or what they can imagine under the title of a job advertisement. Since the job search is fast to a Search in the terms forest.

The real problem of job advertisements

Overview

Lateral thinker and Berufebilder-Author Axel Haitzer, shows what a job advertisement could look like, with the perfect candidate are sought: namely the example of the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, the 1900 men looking for a dangerous trip for a low pay with an uncertain outcome - and also found: He is said to have received more than 4000 applications.

If Shackleton had formulated a spongy advertisement according to the current pattern, Haitzer concludes, but certainly a lot of unsuitable candidates would have applied - and Sir Ernest Shackleton would have wasted time and money in recruiting or even jeopardized the success of his expedition.

The problem with the AGG

Overview

But the problem is not simply the expression. For the often inaccurately spongy formulations, there are usually several reasons:

  1. Not all the people who advertise jobs know exactly what the company's department is looking for.
  2. Not everyone is clear what they are looking for.
  3. The General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) is responsible for all other inaccuracies.

As the journalists Florian Vollmers and Anne Jacoby noted, is used for many places actually clearly a man or a woman or applicant at a certain age was searched for and finally selected. Only can say no one before.

Are Xing and LinkedIn better than job ads?

Overview

So are LinkedIn and LinkedIn better than job ads? Do you actually find a job through social networks?

In my experience and opinion the clear answer is: Yes. Because only in exchange with others, without the annoying competition of the concept forest, applicants find a job that is directly tailored to their personality and ability, and personnel the ideal candidate with the exact profile of job requirements.

Both might never have found each other through job advertisements. In other words, it just fits!
