Meetings: showcases instead of knowledge sharing
No diligence no price - the old saying seems in many companies and industries for a long time no longer apply. Because usually in the job not those in the lead, who always do their job well, but those who can sell best.
Once again meeting: Mere Müller dragged himself into the meeting room, while on his desk the files stacked. Müller knows exactly what is ahead of him:

Colleagues Mayer and Schmitt, these chatterboxes, will again come to the top form and go on for a long time in self-praise while the really important things remain. In the end, the result will be zero, but Müller has lost a lot of time. He calls this meaningless time-use.
But Müller is wrong. The show-off in front of colleagues and supervisors, for example in a meeting, is more important than constant high performance: When it comes to career opportunities, talkers like Mayer and Schmitt have the better cards and someone like Müller, who always diligently works off his tasks, fails. Because the decisive factor is how someone is perceived - and not what he does in the quiet little room, often hardly verifiable.
As others perceive
The reason for this lies in the fact that people interact and communicate with people: The boss does not see, for example, how Müller works day by day in the office. On the contrary, he only sees him as a person who squats with an annoyed expression in the meeting and thinks that this must be a supernatural person.
On the other hand, he always gets what Mayer and Schmitt tell about their job in the meeting and considers them both very dedicated and competent. In short, the boss only believes what he sees and hears; That may not always be fair, but people are just ticking like that.
The 110% lie
Another reason: those like Müller always complacently done until the middle of the night, all tasks incurred is considered dutiful, but does not gain respect from others. Chefs and colleagues then have the impression that they can do anything with a miller because he does not think so and patiently says yes to everything. No good career requirements. Plainly speaking, this means that anyone who always gives 110 percent in the job and always wants the boss to be right is not promoted. Careers tend to make the self-acting. Many people know this from their own experience: most of them have already experienced that the better is not the praise, but the one who can do well with the boss.
Deduct the self-presentation correctly
But there is hope for all to whom too much self-expression is a horror. For years, for example, an alleged IBM study by the media that only 10% of the job actually depends on performance, 30 percent of success depends on image, and entire 60 percent is determined by the level of awareness Company, This study has now turned out to be a phantom.
So these rules are not quite so fixed. In the course of drastic changes in our economic system, companies are beginning to realize that too many self-presentation is to be enjoyed with caution. And in the end, the quality is often the end.
Until then, you should be aware of the fact that certain rules apply in the job. You do not have to profile yourself at the expense of others, or you must constantly glue the boss. Even if constant willingness to perform is generally praiseworthy, another tactic usually leads to success: instead of trying to achieve a certain amount of performance at all costs, one should attach greater importance to one's own self-presentation. Then you will usually be more successful.
