Human vs. Artificial intelligence: We are superior to AI in many ways
We humans score with a huge number of things that artificial intelligence (AI) cannot yet do: with humor, with empathy, with instincts, impulsiveness, spirituality, with the play of the senses, contextual understanding, tact, improvisational talent, negotiating skills and common sense. And especially with the pleasure in the social, what the anthropologist Lionel Tiger calls “sociopleasure”.
Those who are skilled in such areas and also develop further in terms of technology are ahead in the digital age. Industrialization revolutionized body work, digitization is now turning brain work inside out. Above all, artificial intelligences relieve us of the stupid work, so that we can turn to higher-quality tasks and smarter job profiles.
What human intelligence has to offer
These mainly have to do with innovating, adapting, combining, experimenting, coordinating, collaborating, making flexible, individualizing and emotionalizing. Such skills require adaptability and, most importantly, a sense of both people and the latest technology.
Human intelligence (MI) can score with an enormous wealth of variants. Among other things there is the logical, linguistic, musical, spatial, somatic and emotional intelligence. To make us fit for the future, we now have to quickly develop two new intelligences:
- the adaptive intelligence, which can adapt quickly and flexibly to the constantly new, unstoppable circumstances that are beating down on us, and
- the digital intelligence that permeates technology so far that it can distinguish the real from the wrong and the good from the bad.
Fluid intelligence: learning is still possible from 50
Can you learn that? Yeah yeah After 50 you don't learn anything anymore? Pah! Our brain is a lifelong construction site, what science calls neuroplasticity. With sufficient repetition, automatisms develop that slide from the conscious into the subconscious, the so-called autopilot. This makes processes more routine, more agile and more effective.
The distinction between fluid and crystalline intelligence, which goes back to the personality psychologist Raymond Bernard Cattell, is also significant. Fluid intelligence encompasses skills such as quick comprehension, agile action and the creation of original problem solutions. Fluid intelligence tends to decrease a little with age.
Crystalline intelligence, on the other hand, increases with age. It includes broad knowledge, intuition nourished by experience and an eye for connections. Fluids and crystalline intelligences become im Company second hand. They need to be linked and work together.
Not a child's scheme: Why AI scares us
In Western cultures, thinking machines and robots are mostly seen as threats that may one day destroy humanity - a belief of which the American film industry is not entirely innocent. In Asian cultures, on the other hand, robots are considered something good. That's why they look so cute there. In humanoid form, they are much smaller than us, so as not to scare us. And their faces correspond to the child pattern. This makes them acceptable and facilitates access - a fact that is causing the Far Eastern economy to boom.
Western robots, on the other hand, usually look like adults. We confront them and transfer our fear of them to any kind of AI. But instead of scaremongering and defense, we should better deal with the design of opportunities - without naivety and with a keen eye on the risks. And instead of complaining about the decline in jobs, we should rather prepare for the professions of the future. Human-machine cooperation is an inevitable path.
What artificial intelligences have to offer
AI can do tens of thousands of things that are valuable in everyday business in order to increase the quality of the work of employees, such as: Optimizing processes, automating interactions, algorithmizing probabilities, making predictions. People, on the other hand, are in demand when context-related fresh approaches are required that cannot be “calculated” even with a wealth of data. Ideas with character, so to speak.
On the other hand, when it comes to efficiency, speed, large quantities, mountains of information, low costs, pure routines and / or coping with repetitive, strenuous, dirty, unhealthy and dangerous work, artificial intelligence is ahead. She learns incredibly quickly because she can access huge amounts of data, processes and networks them in a fraction of a second. At most it takes hours where people need weeks, months, years.
How AI is changing work and learning
Jobs are not becoming fewer but different, namely higher quality and therefore more demanding. And they're always changing. That in turn means: So that employees can keep pace with the challenges of the future world of work, lifelong learning, high flexibility and constant willingness to change are a must. The usual standard training programs, through which pretty much everyone is routed through, whether they need it or not, are obsolete.
So put an end to stock learning about content that you don't need. That bores and creates indifference. No more prescribed training and unit programs. Something like that is of little use and devours a lot of money. In the future, employee development must be tailored precisely and “just in time” to the individual situation. It takes place in bites and interactively, mostly with the help of online modules that can be accessed from anywhere.
Digitization allows us to learn faster and better
Training courses that used to take days can now be completed within a few hours via AI mentors or via VR and AR tutorials, i.e. via glasses that connect you to the virtual world. You can also deepen your knowledge in a dialogue with digital assistants without inhibiting thresholds.
In addition, the workforce learns from one another by self-motivated forming appropriate circles, i.e. learning groups, and sharing their knowledge in learning communities. In addition to situational further development by the employer, personal initiative is also required. Those who do not constantly increase their digital skills on their own initiative will dispose of themselves in the future.
