Alternative recruiting - can that work?
When I moderated a panel on teambuilding in recruiting at Zukunft Personal, Europe's largest trade fair for the industry, one question kept popping up:
Can team-building activities such as climbing together, skiing or hiking replace costly application processes? Can this even be an alternative to traditional recruiting, because you can test the applicants in advance, so to speak?
LinkedIn co-founder Konstantin Guericke for example, has been hiking with students for years and states: "Sharing special experiences brings people together." That is why Guericke uses hiking to get to know applicants or start-up founders better. The one well-known from the Harald Schmidt Show also hits the same horn Grimme Award winner Manuel Andrack: For him, hiking has a connecting element: "When hiking, you go deeper and talk about the essentials."
No wonder that many too Company regularly combine events with outdoor activities: like Microsoft in Bergen; Norway's second-largest city is not in vain one of the most popular event locations because it unites urbanity with breathtaking nature and offers so much space for joint activities.
Teambuilding with Google and Facebook
Similarly close to Dublin-based IT companies like Google or Facebook is the nearby one County Wicklow, But adventure is also taken care of in Ireland: the Donegal region in the very northwest of the island offers a lot of rough and still relatively untouched nature and the opportunity for all kinds of outdoor activities.
In Germany, especially the Zugspitz region with similar popularity is waiting: It not only offers outdoor activities around and on Germany's highest mountain or with Garmisch-Partenkirchen a real Olympic destination: The G7 summit at Schloss Elmau made the region known far beyond the German borders. It's no coincidence that the summit took place here, as Elmau is one of the Leading Hotels of the World, an association of more than 375 luxury hotels in 75 countries.
Bringing teams closer together - does that really work?
Even if it's superficially about fun, such recruiting or teambuilding events are mainly used to bring teams closer together or get to know applicants, because they promote the communication in the group. But especially interesting are the reactions in difficult situations: For example, who takes over the leadership, who is the opponent?
And yet the question arises: How useful are team building measures anyway? In fact, there are doubts about the effectiveness: "Real team building takes place in daily practice, nowhere else," explains the Coach and business economist Jörg Romstötter. Instead of extreme sports, he recommends: "Give your people the opportunity to regularly celebrate success in their very own specialist task."
Rather employer branding as recruiting
In fact, that was also the result of our discussion, teambuilding events can not replace recruiting or a sense of achievement, but they do support community spirit and corporate culture. For companies that want to be successful in the long term, this is becoming increasingly important.
However, such events are more suitable than employer branding measures, because as a full recruiting replacement.
