Men talk about their competences

Overview

Not infrequently, it is much easier for men to talk about their competences and demand the corresponding recognition as a matter of course. In any case, I know a lot more men than women, who sometimes "hit the spot" and verbally praise their performance as a body language as a great achievement.

They often succeed and reap much admiration. Others later remember theirs and come back to them as "specialists" when needed.

The Chef must see what I do!

Overview

In contrast, Paulina's action is not an isolated case from the ranks of my customers. The participants of a "High Potential" Career Workshop had worked out their personal competencies during the day, they were supposed to visualize them and formulate goals with the necessary next steps.

Then came Paulina, a graduate of an English elite university and since 3 ½ years as a physicist in a demanding group. With her, over time had accumulated a lot of trouble, and she was glad to give him a breath. She scolded:

"For a while, I have had the feeling that I am literally on the spot and simply not getting any further in my career. But my male colleagues are easily preferred to me, just because they are constantly bragging about their actions and bragging about Hinz and Kunz. Each little thing treat them as if they had a great deal gewupppt! In school and college, I was always very good and got appropriate grades for it. Now I bring just as good results, but I can make an effort, as I want - it does not notice, unless I trumpet it loud! I just can not and will not accept that my boss does not see that on his own. It can not be that I have to rub it all over his nose again, which I've done great. For that he is my boss, that he sees, what I do everything ?! "

Women must overcome more inhibitions

Overview

Paulina even questioned the society in which one needed elbows and in which one was more pre-emptied with hitting and stabbing than with constant good performance. Thereupon a lively discussion broke loose, in which once again it became clear that women must overcome much more inhibitions, if they should or should talk about their actions.

Some of the more seasoned women, like most of the men in the group, clearly stated how important it is to talk about themselves in order to be included in the ranks of "high potentials".

Working with the boss when communicating

Overview

But the women also described that that was a "real learning process" for them. The most helpful aspect was the realization that the boss simply had to rely on his employees to "work in".

In other words, you have to tell the boss what you are doing. He had enough to do with the overall project and his superiors, which would make him lose sight of the individual.
