And what do you do as a Germanist?
Surely everyone sooner or later hears the well-liked question "And what do you start with your studies of German?" My standard answer was always and especially with blase questioners: "If I found out, you'll find out first." Which does not mean that I had no plan, only I preferred to execute it "in secret".
But in turn: Everything started with the love for the written word and the dream of scripts and publishing of the future world bestsellers. Therefore, I decided to study already mentioned above with a focus on "German Literary Studies" and as a compensatory second major subject my second hobby "Ancient History" with the then still usual degree Magistra Artium.
For several reasons (friend, family, study offer and possible subjects combinations) I chose the University of Leipzig as the place of my student activity. I can proudly report that I was able to complete my studies very successfully in nine semesters, although I had to overcome some hurdles in the recognition of my Latinum.
Detours lead to the goal
But also with a successful graduation certificate from the 600-year-old university and with the suffix MA, the struggle for a job began. Even with various completed internships at the radio and in editorial offices as the first "work experience" I did not find the judges job. To be able to pay the rent and cat food for my rent, I resolutely took a set-up in a real estate brokerage office, and before I knew it, I was an estate agent's assistant. Not necessarily the right place for a humanities scholar one would like to mean, I say: yes.
Although, of course, the real estate industry has little to do with Goethe, Schiller and the theory of literature, I have nevertheless been able to apply a variety of knowledge and skills at work in a broker's office during studying. In addition to time management and the coordination of a wide variety of areas and tasks, this included different research applications for the inspection of files, building documentation and the like, as well as the ability to work efficiently and results-oriented.
As a result of my work in the real estate sector, I began to write thematic-specific articles for various real estate magazines and the like, and I was able to build up a first stand as an online editor. In the course of time, the activity as an online editor became more and more extensive, so I was able to give up my job in real estate and now work as a freelance online editor in Frankfurt.
Conclusion: use internships
I can only advise all students of German studies or other spiritual sciences, who are about to graduate, to try their internships and volunteer work in the semester breaks, depending on their interests. This not only helps to expand the horizon and its own skills, it also enables a niche to be found in later professional life.
The fact that Germanists or scholars in the arts are only interested in cultural or social work has long since ceased to be a rule, and the most diverse opportunities for German literary graduates and the many other highly trained scholars are offered, especially in business and, above all, online.
