50% of children already in therapy
In a Forsa survey commissioned by the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), almost half of the parents surveyed indicated that their child had already received therapeutic support. More than one in four children between six and 18 years received speech therapy (speech therapy), almost one in five occupational therapies, and as many children were at physiotherapy.
At least one in ten children were treated psychotherapeutically. In addition, the survey found that girls are significantly more affected, only barely 40 percent of the children treated were boys. Are the Germans on the right path to become a people of neuroticists?
To little space for development?
York Scheller, a psychologist at TK, puts the results into perspective: "Fortunately, there are now very good ways to support children with developmental problems therapeutically. It is remarkable that almost every second school child has undergone therapy and that this tendency is even increasing. It raises the question of whether we give the children in their everyday life sufficient incentives and space to develop. "
The goals of speech therapy and occupational therapy are to train children's communication skills, movement, perception, coordination and attention. Logopedics is useful, for example, when it comes to counteract speech errors such as stuttering or lisping early. "In addition to all therapeutic options, it is always important that parents and educators playfully encourage children in their everyday lives," says Scheller.
Less TV, more exchange with the environment?
The TK survey found that the proportion of children who watch TV more than two hours a day is greater among children with therapy experience than among students who grow up without professional assistance. "You do not learn to speak in front of the TV.
For linguistic - and, of course, motor development - it is important that the children perceive themselves and their environment in real life. For the exchange with others, the social interaction is essential, "says the TK psychologist.
Loneliness promotes neuroses?
"Our survey shows, however, that it's the children who need healing care that are less likely to play with friends than others." In the TK survey, more than ten percent of their parents said that their son or daughter did not meet friends at all , More 37 percent play with other children for a maximum of one hour a day.
"What was still a matter of course for the generation of parents to meet after school and homework with their peers, is obviously nowadays for fewer and fewer children. And that's exactly what matters to her. Playing with others promotes curiosity and independence. The children have a natural urge to move and only if they have the chance to let off steam, they can also raise the necessary concentration for the school in the morning and have a sound sleep at night. "
The psychologist therefore recommends to ensure a regular daily routine, to give the children sufficient opportunity to play and romp and to plan common rituals such as a good-night story or a play afternoon. This provides a good basis for developing language, coordination and imagination.
