I studied General and Comparative Literature, Book Science and Law. My professional preparation began with the choice of my subjects: I had asked myself, which combinations of subjects make sense and then decided for that reason, especially for law in the minor subject.

Internships and part-time jobs
In addition to my studies, I also started to do internships in the first semester today as a Junior Lecturer at Campus-Verlag, which provided me with insights into the desired job - and with very different ones Company: Ever at a publishing house for fiction and a science publisher, a literary agency and the Stiftung Lesen. Parallel to this, additional jobs were added to a bookstore and in the ZDF editorial office.
In this way, I noticed early on which areas of responsibility within the literary business come into question for me. For example, I soon realized that press work is less important to me and that I definitely wanted to work in the editorial department.
However, I did not only want to use my internships to gain experience, but also to establish important contacts, some of which I still maintain today. Because a good network is one of the most important factors for starting a career. Many companies look for their employees at short notice and like to save lengthy selection process. Good contacts help to be in the right place at the right time in such situations. As a result, chances are good to find out about vacancies before they are advertised.
Tips for job search
For me, contacts were not the ticket to her dream job: I found the invitation for a traineeship on the publisher's website. After a total of only five applications, I signed the employment contract a few weeks after graduation.
The learning effect is important!
Today, as an editor, I look after the job application advisors at Campus and also participate in selection interviews. I can therefore give students the following important tip: When choosing an internship, it's not just about the reputation of the company, but about learning something.
Trainees should get involved, work independently on interesting tasks and ask questions so that they can explain something to them - because employees do not always have enough time to approach interns on their own initiative. But whoever realizes that he really does not learn anything during the internship should also have the courage to break off an internship and look for another.
Personal commitment is important
After all, the job search is based on this personal commitment: anyone who still has no experience in a job can also hardly judge whether the desired career is actually the right thing for him.
In addition, such internships and jobs teach key skills that show the potential employer that the candidate is able to capitalize on their business skills, such as working under pressure, working as a team, or dealing with clients.
Work experience - but right!
However, it makes no sense to line up any work experience as you like; rather, the jobs should show a red line in the curriculum vitae and progress in personal development, as otherwise companies quickly get the impression that the candidate is undecided and unambitious. Therefore, in addition to the subject of study, employers pay particular attention to their previous work experience.
For example, we look at how someone presents themselves, whether he suits us and whether he has an affinity for this profession. In addition, the book industry is quite small. It's easy to get around if someone has left a particularly positive or negative impression during an internship.
