Why a professional termination makes sense

Professional behavior, even when the time has come to say goodbye, is more important than ever, as working people change jobs more and more often. For example, 91 percent of Generation Y expect to spend less than three years working for the same company. For this degree, however, it requires a bit of sensitivity, because a departure in honor can open when looking for doors, which remain firmly closed in a less glamorous finish.

In the meantime it is easier for the employer than ever to get a picture about you at an early stage. A quick look at LinkedIn can show common contacts whose opinions can promote or destroy your next career opportunity. Therefore, the first step towards the next career opportunity is always to leave the last job reasonably.

Termination with style - 4 slightly different tips

But how do you leave the job with style? On the basis of a termination is now not discussed in more detail, whether you should cancel by phone, via eMail, or in a personal interview (the best option), whether it is advisable to tell your line manager first (in any case), whether you should write a formal notice letter (necessarily), or whether you should tell your boss what Bothering you about him and / or the company (not a good idea).

Instead, there are now four (somewhat more rarely discussed) tips that will help you leave the company like a professional:

1. Do not quit!

You really want to quit? Do not cancel! They are fed up again. You could go up the wall after your boss has changed his mind for the seventh time, or your colleague drives you crazy.

Perhaps you are struggling with an almost insoluble problem. This is not the right time to cancel. Stay, solve the problems you are facing and leave the company at a peak. Then when you have achieved something truly extraordinary.

2. Do not quit surprisingly

Your termination should not come as a surprise. I too have already quit. Already several months before my departure, I summed up all courage and confided to my boss that I might have to leave the company soon. The reasons were among others:

  • I wanted to enroll at the Graduate School.
  • I liked the company, but my passion and abilities were no longer consistent with the direction in which the company had developed.
  • I felt that one of my employees would have earned my job.

Once an employee and I announced our position on the same day - both of us were in leading positions. Our CEO was visibly angry at my colleague's dismissal.

To me, on the other hand, he said: "Since you told us about your intention to quit a while ago, we were able to adjust to this and see your quit differently." It is not always possible to communicate relevant thoughts in advance, for example if you have a vindictive manager, but early openness is often better than you would expect.

3. Proactively ensure a smooth handover

A well documented transfer shows that you are anxious to leave the company in good agreement. Write briefly and concisely, but clearly, what your successor needs to know at the job - or your supervisor. This includes a description of your tasks, how to do them, and how to lead them to success. Record the most important files and all login data. Also include positively formulated and helpful suggestions for improvement.

You may want to go a step further and help you find a suitable successor. This was the case, for example, when I met one of the most difficult decisions of my life and gave up my dream job. If you want to write a job description, you can recommend candidates and help with presentations. Support your successor as soon as possible during the training phase.

4. Work harder than ever after announcing the termination

Do you leave the company soon, do you spend the rest of your working time relaxed and have only a few tasks left to do anyway? Is that the impression you want to leave behind? The last impression is especially important. I still remember Elisa N., who left the company I was working for a few years ago. After she had given notice, she continued to work as hard as if she were at risk for her life.

When I left the office at 21:XNUMX p.m. on her last working day, she was still typing eagerly on her computer and gave the impression that there was nothing more important than showing results to the last second. If you asked me today if you should hire Elisa N., I would say, "Hire this woman without hesitation."

A change of work requires courage

As I have listed these tips here, I am nevertheless well aware that implementation is not easy in reality. A change of work requires strength and courage. Do not be afraid to seek help.

As already written in the article, dismissals by the employee should be considered carefully. There is also often the case that the employee is “fed up” again and would prefer to leave the company immediately. However, you should never give up on emotions like this, as these may only be temporary and two weeks later the work, the company and the colleagues are not that bad. If the termination is nevertheless the last resort, there are some things to consider here as well, otherwise it will be ineffective. In addition, here is a contribution to the letter of termination:
