Flexible working hours and eMailBreaks are good for the balance
It is a difficult balancing act for many employees to adjust their private life and their everyday work. On average, 15,6 hours are used by full-time employees in Germany according to the OECD on average daily needs, such as food, sleeping and leisure activities. For an 40-hour-week, plus work-way, there are not many hours left per day. Sufficient time for the family and partners, however, is one of the strongest occupational targets for over 90 percent of the workforce in Germany.
In order to maintain employee satisfaction, their long-term motivation - and thus, not least, their productivity - employers are well advised to work on the topic of work-life balance. Basically, it is important that Company take their employees' feedback on working conditions seriously. One source is the employer ratings that workers leave on Glassdoor. The platform can be a very useful channel for employers to find out what is really important to employees and to interact with them.
Work-life balance is not equal to work-life balance
But it is no less important than showing an open ear that it is necessary to bring about corresponding changes - based on an evaluation of the different needs of the mostly heterogeneous workforce. Because what a balanced balance between working life and leisure time means concretely is subjective and differs from employee to employee. Career-oriented career starters, for example, usually have different ideas than young parents or employees with teenage children.
However, our data analysis shows that there are many companies in Germany that are able to adapt to the different requirements of their employees and to enable their employees to achieve a good balance between private and professional life through a mixed mix of measures. We have scrutinized all employer ratings, which were shared and published by Glassdoor employees from Germany last year. All companies that have received at least 30 ratings in the Work-Life Balance category during this period have been considered. General employer assessments are also possible on an 5 point scale, as are the assessments of specific factors (including the work-life balance, among others, the managers, remuneration and benefits). The ten best performing companies were included in our top 10 ranking.

Work-life balance best in Austria - Germany in midfield in Western Europe
In an international comparison, the German worker is also in the midst of the compatibility of private and working life. According to Glassdoor, the overall average value for the factor Work-Life-Balance is 3,5, which is better than in the USA and the UK (3,3) as well as France and Switzerland (3,4). The work-life balance in Austria (3,9), the Netherlands (3,7) and Belgium (3,6) is the best.
