Think in clusters

In Germany, we are talking of clusters. For example, The Life Science Cluster. Many regions have their own cluster sites.

Here you can learn about key factors which currently influence a contact details. Many of these sites also have job portals.

Read published job-advertisements

Why, this is a waste of time, you’re thinking? No. Read job-advertisements from large and small companies. Study the tasks and the skills required. Learn what a Master of Science can do in a company like that.

Look what tasks might interest you. How are job titles and tasks offered by companies? Do you have the qualifications required?

The application

An Application in Germany has 5 parts and is different than here in the U.S.

  1. You will need a cover letter
  2. CV
  3. Certificates
  4. Photo is always recommended (very different to US!!!)
  5. The Email which you send these documents with.

When I saw Thomas’s application documents for the first time, I was shocked. I was very impressed and it was very difficult for me to give him the following advice.

What had happened?

The cover letter included three pages and the CV was a book. Thomas had every article he had written, every project he had worked on listed accurately. In the letter he described in detail his thoughts and visions of his life.

It was really impressive to read and there was no doubt – Thomas was a very intelligent man. Unfortunately, there are two types of HR managers. One half is reading an application letter. The other half doesn’t. So you have a 50/50 chance. Is that enough if one is looking for a job?
